N.Korean Forces Crack Down on Protesters in Border Town
Hundreds of people clashed with security forces in the North Korean town of Sinuiju on the border with China on Friday, a source in the Stalinist country said Wednesday.
The military was deployed to quell the demonstration, leaving some protesters wounded.
The source said police officers cracking down on traders in a market in Sinuiju after the public holidays marking leader Kim Jong-il's birthday beat one of them unconscious. The victim's family protested and many other traders went along to support them.
When it looked as though other people might join the traders, security agents and military troops moved in. Rumor has it that four or five people were killed in the resulting clashes, but no details of civilian casualties are known.
The security forces were reportedly on emergency alert in the area after the incident. A defector from Sinuiju said, "Since Feb. 15, I've had difficulties communicating with my contact in Sinuiju. I called him at a pre-arranged time but his mobile phone was turned off."
The source said while the protest was sparked by the crackdown in the market, it was an eruption of long pent-up discontent.
The regime had promised to dole out special rations to Sinuiju residents ahead of Kim's birthday on Feb. 16 but reportedly failed to keep the promise. People were also angry that the regime was once again trying to interfere with their attempts to earn a living in the market.
Meanwhile, the online newspaper Daily NK reported on Wednesday that the regime created a special mobilization force to prevent any demonstrations similar to the recent uprisings in the Middle East.

More bottom-up cracking of regime. The regime may respond by initiating another (and bigger) military provocation against SK.

Two people were EXECUTED for reading anti-government flyers and their extended families sent to the death camps.
That is how the Norks operate.

If the world and particularly the FREE WEST cared: Weapons, ammunition, survival food, maps, GPS devices, other communications devices, cash (for bribery) flyers, printing machines, mini cameras, propaganda VHS and DVDs montaging the uprising in Middle East dubbed in Korean, must all be smuggled in to the DPRK, best through China's border, or other ways. The VOA Korean broadcasts should continue in earnest and balloon propaganda efforts should also be taken in several notches. You dont get this kind of momentum very often.
If Obama does not do this (which of course I doubt he would), then private efforts through private agencies and funding must be considered ASAP.

Actually, local defector organization in SK is doing it. They are using what they call "Stealth USB." It is an usb which initially appear to be blank. When checked at the border custom, it shows "0 bytes" of content. However, the contents become alive after a certain time, as far as I know. It allegedly contains lots of outside information, including latest news on Mid-East uprisings.
They claim that it has been going on for a year, and hundreds have been smuggled into NK.

There also exists certain cellphone technology out there, with cheap handsets, that the Chicoms and Norkies (who are coordinating) cannot easily hack or get into. Beijing is allying with Pyongyang to shut down their cell system and make it 100% hermetically sealed and under 24/7 PSB monitoring. Communist bastard comrades in arms! These should be blanketed throughout rurual and suburban (and third tier cities in DPRK) with Korean-language instructions, and then spread the word further through "kuchikomi" (word of mouth) (평가)?, etc. etc. A growing uprising CAN be engineered against Kim Jong il and Kim Jong un, but not without some bloodshed I am sad to say--and a reasonable replacement must also be assured. These will be the true North Korean liberation heroes of the future who will deserve wonderful monuments in Pyongyang, where the old, disgusting and objectionable Kim regime monuments currently stand--which should be relegated to amusement parks as items of oddity.

Agreed.
They should send a few dozen cellphones as a trial run to see the effect.
It will invite hissy fit from Norks no doubt.
