(CNN) -- Phyllis Macay wrote of her travels around the world with the breathlessly joyous and staccato style of a teenager.
"I can say that I want to spend a week here ... month here ... maybe a year," she once wrote of visiting Corsica. "It is exciting, vastly busy ... and beautiful at the same time."
That sort of infectious love of adventure, of sailing, of seeing the world was a defining characteristic not only of Macay, but also her companion Bob Riggle and friends Jean and Scott Adam, friends and family say.
All four died early Tuesday off the coast of Somalia at the hands of pirates who had hijacked the Adams' yacht, the Quest.

Yes it does.
My bad, never having been there, I was going from memory.
Note to self... read carefully; check before posting.
Yeah Right - tell that to the thousands of families in West Virginia, Eastern Kentucky and dozens upon dozens of places across the USA...
I have little sympathy for missionaries who get zapped in strange foreign places when thousands of lives and souls are in need of saving within the borders of the USA...
Our stupid U.S. Government does this sort of thing routinely - and most of us hate it ... so why are religious organizations imitating our errant Government ... ???
I have little sympathy for missionaries who get zapped in strange foreign places when thousands of lives and souls are in need of saving within the borders of the USA...
Maybe take a re-look at your book.

Wouldn't sticking close to the coast be a good idea as well?
Maybe a top notch radar system would be nice to have as well, to avoid some “surprises”...
They were retired couples who decided to fulfill a dream and sail the globe. They were churchly folks of sufficient incomes, lovers of sailing, belonged to a local yaching club, one was an expert skipper, and all evidently were adventurous.
Carrying the Bibles aboard their vessel for distrbution during their travels was a commendable and very nice touch. However, this doesn't make them missionaries or religious "martyrs" any more than distributing pocket Constitutions at their tourist stops would make them official emissaries of our State Department.

God may not value a life in Africa or where ever versus an American life less or more -
BUT I DO ... and that is what counts for me... I love the Christian Religion - but I am not a fan of American Churches ... Church and Religion in America is a vastly different subject...
Go save the world - and start with Somalia if you wish ... get yourself zapped ... if that is what you wish to do...
I would rather help an American child find their way - get an education, have enough food ... that is what I do ...
Go save the heathens - I’m working on my poor neighbors down the street...
Just going on news reports ... and not main stream media... If it is not true - that they were not distributing Bibles - then fine... The two couples were still STUPID for sailing off the Somalia coast... just plain DUMB...
Dimwits or Nitwits...Either or both...
excellent commentary
there is a lot of (misplaced) anger here, isn’t there?
Think of those fools who went abroad to spread it and lost their lives. idiots like Peter, Paul, Thomas. Why didn't they stay home where they were needed in Judea?
Think when Jesus met the apostles he said “Stupid is as stupid does! All that “Go out among the world stuff... - you didn't really think I meant that, did you?”
Although the ultimate irony of your anger at these folks is, they were just about like any other sunbirds on a travel trailer caravan or a golf course in Arizona, except they were on a saillboat in the Indian Ocean. They were heading home on the last leg of a 10 year quest when they were captured on the high seas 300 miles off the coast of OMAN (geography refresher at their log link below) and killed. They were not on a Bible mission.
Read their log before you share more anger and hate and envy and contempt of these murdered Americans.
Equating the US Secret Service with the Nazi SS is a bit of a stretch.
I wasn't trying to impress you, but don't let that diminish your sense of self importance, nor your doomed efforts to live up to your father's expectations. As for me being a left winger, that is hilarious.
Cheers, and have a nice day.
Everything I've seen says they were something like 1200 miles away from Somalia. They'd just left Mumbai and were still 500 miles from Oman.
I simply won't join in the blame-the-victim stuff.
Yep. And MOST of those “converted” to the muzzie cult will be black and have no idea of the role the muzzies played in the slavery of most of their ancestors.
Sometimes victims are fools... obviously the sailing couples were TOO CLOSE to Somalia - because the Somali Pirates captured them ... or is that too much to comprehend?
Diving into a shallow stream from 40 feet up is STUPID - but some do it.
Driving 100 miles per hour on the Freeway is STUPID - but some do it.
Playing Russian Roulette is STUPID - but many have done it.
VICTIMS are YES sometimes to blame for contributing to their own deaths... for being stupid....
Flying at night in the clouds without instrument training and without the proper certification is STUPID but some people have done it to their peril
John John Kennedy flew an airplane into weather and poor visual conditions without proper certification and training - and John John was STUPID for doing it...
Doing STUPID things - even in the name of spreading the word of God is still STUPID...
God does not give immunity from being stupid - HE just calls it our FATE ...
OK. Whatever blows your skirt up...
I think that it’s the pirates that are the problem.
Yes the Pirates are the main problem ... but foolish people should NOT put themselves or others in HARM’S WAY... GET IT?
