Yes, I’ve heard that this is a problem. Firearms were forbidden because of the possibility of mutiny, and it was actually the insurers who forbade them. But I vaguely recall that some ships now have a sort of “amory” and a “safe room” now which the crew can get to as soon as there’s trouble. These big tankers and freighters are nearly completely automated and have very small crews.

But the best solution is to get rid of the pirates. And any states or groups supporting them. This has become such a lucrative business that apparently Al Qaida is getting in on the action.
