Right you are Frantzie! I have lived in California all my life. I can tell you that when I was in high school in the 1950’s this was really a special place, and it many ways, it still is. Our problem was in influx of East Coast Liberals starting at the beginning of WW II. Take Nancy Pelosi. She came here as Nancy D’Alessandro, the daughter of the corrupt mayor of Baltimore. Take Babs Boxer, an early transplant from Brooklyn. Sadly a very special place was a magnet for East Coast Trash. For years, they have thwarted efforts at stemming the tide of illegal immigration. So now 35% of our over crowded prisons are from Mexico and points South. Los Angeles County spends $400 million a month on benes for illegals, and illegals in SoCal have caused the closure of any number of hospitals because Federal Law REQUIRES that we treat them for FREE! When I went through the public schools, California was regarded as first in the nation. Now we, are 48th despite the $12,000+ per pupil we spend each year. So thanks for your note of support. I hope I live to see the day when we can once again be proud of our state and it’s government.

This public employee union mess needs to be called what it is.

It is a taxpayer funded money laundrying scheme that has financed the democrat party for the last 40 years.

Some states are much worse than others.

California, with 12 percent of the nation’s population, has 30 percent of the nation’s welfare recipients.

The percentage of unionized public employees in California is 20% higher than the national average.

In California the state’s public-safety workers retire with a pension equal to 90% of their salaries if they had served at least 30 years.

I could go on, but why bother. Read it for yourself.

I agree it’s good if California fails as a lesson to every other state — but California will be deemed ‘too big to fail’ and the rest of us will be called upon to bail out the nation’s worst offender.

First, I live in California.

Second, In the face of economic disaster voters in this state went hard left thinking more of the same will magically fix things while essentially the rest of the country went hard right.

Third, California cannot be “bailed out”. It simply can't be done. Any bailing will only slow the sinking ship while its being done. The water is rushing in because or leftest leaders refuse to plug the huge economic holes, unions, illegals, etc while at the same time pushing its business tax base out of the state as fast as it can.

Forth, California is going to go bankrupt. Technically it already has when it started issuing IOU’s. It became insolvent at that time.

Last, the only issue for California at this point is will our “leaders” do anything to manage it, to minimize the damage or will they simply ride it all the way down until the final say is by a judge liquidating California's obligations.

I went to a one room school grades 1-8, 42 students, no interior walls and one teacher. Without exception all students learned and excelled - but we knew what awaited us at home if we did not. Respect of authority, manners, discipline and an quest for knowledge all begin at home. IMO until the family structure is restored and all parents accept responsibility for instilling these attributes in their children, not much will change.

It will take real reforms — reforms that will never happen under Governor Moonbeam.

Of course Governor Moonbeam is only a symptom of the real fatal flaw with California — the judgment of California voters.

“What you have is undisciplined kids who don’t want to learn, and therefore shouldn’t be wasting the taxpayers’ money at schools in the first place - and the crazy-a$$ Children-of-the-Sixties (and Seventies, etc.) parents, who spawned these spoiled little feral monsters, and who then keep demanding everyone else needs to pony up their money for a worthless educational system that fails to educate. Class size my arse. Home school them if you think that’s important.”

Right you are!
My wife is a teacher in the Indianapolis school system. The reason kids don’t learn isn’t because of money spent. It is because the family and the culture has been destroyed. Starting with FDR and then Johnson’s “Great Society” the underclass (not just blacks) have been trained to do nothing more than sign a government check. There is zero morality left in much of the inner city culture. I’ve heard black pastors give pep talks about “It’s MY time now” and other drivel and then give a wink and a nod to blatant sin.
Detroit is a result of sin and just a microcosm of the rest of our western culture.

It is interesting to hear Detroit whine about it's public schools and how many have to be closed and how many kids are jammed into classrooms, etc. The real problem is the Detroit schools don't teach and the dropout rate is huge (I think I remember someone said it was 6 of 10 students, but I may be wrong).

The only thing that can be done for Detroit is to bulldoze the place flat and return it to farm land. It is a failed city and it is not going to come back. Neither will Flint or Gary or some of the other cities in Michigan.

It shows you the mindset of the Detroit teacher's union when they would not accept several charter schools in the city that were to be paid entirely by private funds. Why, because the students admitted to them would actually be motivated to learn something because the teachers would actually teach students instead of indoctrinate them. The unions blocked the charter schools and death spiral of the DPS continues unabated.

If DPS is closing so many schools, are they firing surplus staff (not just teachers, but ADMINISTRATORS and their bloated staffs)? If not, you'll see 75 kids in a class room with one teacher for grades K-12. You'll also have 100 administrators and staffs to service one school building — administrators (and staffs) are absolutely essential to do all the paper shuffling that teaches students in the class room — or are they?

'Slavery school' - sounds like a pretty good description.

Any school where liberal prejudices and racial hatreds are reinforced and rewarded sells its students into mental slavery.

What the slave-masters want these days is not work, but their slaves' votes and their (politically useful) sense of raw entitlement.

I am a teacher & what you said is ABSOLUTELY correct!!!!!!!!!!! It’s that simple & that attainable, but every year more & more parent(s) aren’t parenting, demand freebies, fight for their babies to act how they want.............for a teacher it is a no win situation..............Sorry, but our day is spent almost 80% on discipline. Then you must be very careful because the parents soooooooooooooo want to have a lawsuit. It’s the new lottery!!!!!!!!!!!

Public education is O-V-E-R!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

More money won’t help Detroit’s schools at this point. Do you realize, that even after the cuts, the DPS per student budget will still be over $20,000 per student.

Detroit is considered the most Liberal City in America. Gary, Indiana is number 2. You see what 50+ years of liberalism brings. Misery.....

I have wondered for decades why the leftists in our media can’t put the two together.

“Why the heck can’t students learn with 60 or even 600 kids in a classroom? I simply don’t get it. My 1-12 classes were at least 30+ per room, and I learned. “

Teachers aren’t allowed to punish kids for disrupting the class. You and I didn’t allow our “ADD” to overpower us and let us be disruptive as we understood it would get us humiliated and smacked. Teachers and parents now “medicate” behavior problems. I’ve read that 25% of public school students are essentially medicated into submission. Creating a lifelong drug habit is so much better for kids than smacking them on the behind.

Also, most likely, when you were in school the liberals didn’t force children with severe difficulties into the same class as everybody else. It’s called “mainstreaming.” This means that one or two students may actually eat up 50% or more of a teacher’s time.

Another issue is the gigantic size of today’s schools; thousands of students each. A teacher told me that the primary concern of any student is surviving the day. They aren’t interested in learning, they’re interested in surviving the day. Other students are predators. That’s why big schools have gangs; to offer protection.

I call florida home and we are doing just fine here in our right to work, right to carry, zero income tax state, despite any blather from the MSM.

We do not HAVE a solution for you because voters there keep electing far left loons.
When the can can’t be kicked any farther, Ca. will try to get the Feds to kick our cans.
We all know it. Just a matter of time & how long the MSM can carry the water for Hussein.

So in a real sense, we are actually paying your bills, if you, in point of fact, are living in one of the states that get more from the Feds than you spend.

Valid point, and why no state should be beholden to the Federal government. If the Government is returning money to any state, the Federal government is receiving too much to start with.

The states know what they need, and I’m betting each and every state is fully capable of self support. It is the federal government that has turned the world upside down and made states slaves to federal handouts, welfare, earmarks, or whatever one calls the blackmail used by congress, to keep states in line.

We are very near the point of being free of this evil system. CA could lead the way and tell the fed the solution to its financial difficulties is to keep its money and work its way out of bankruptcy. This would put other states on notice, that they better have a solution that does not involve receiving more than they pay in tribute.

Your IQ is probably 120+,the average Detroit student’s IQ is quite a bit lower. These kids need some individual help and they aren’t going to get it.Help at home probably isn’t there either.
