After Wisconsin, How Do Democrats Argue Against a GOP Government Shutdown?
The Weekly Standard ^ | Feb 20, 2011 | MARK HEMINGWAY

Congressional Democrats engaged in more saber rattling today over concerns House Republicans will shutdown the government if Democrats don't agree to some pretty significant budget cuts. The continuing resolution funding the federal government expires on March 4:

Senior Senate Democrats slammed Republicans on Sunday for a "reckless" threat to shut down the government as political posturing intensified on both sides over federal spending and the budget deficit.

The House of Representatives approved legislation on Saturday to cut federal spending by $61 billion through September. But The bill, pushed through by Republicans, was sure to be significantly changed by President Barack Obama and his fellow Democrats in the Senate.

"Unfortunately Speaker Boehner seems to be on a course that would inevitably lead to a shutdown ... That's reckless," said Democratic Senator Charles Schumer on CNN'S State of the Union program, speaking of House Speaker John Boehner, the top Republican in Congress.

"We have said shutdown is off the table ... Boehner, Mitch McConnell, other Republican leaders have not taken it off the table when asked, and there are lots of people on the hard right clamoring for a shutdown.

The obvious point here is that if it's so "reckless" to shutdown the government, why have Wisconsin legislators, the President and the DNC all supported the government shutdown in Wisconsin? Not only that, they have shutdown the government by fleeing the state and breaking the law, not to mention the illegal union strikes shutting down schools and national Democrats helping to organize the angry mob descending on Madison.

Seems to me the Republican House has passed a budget that should have been done last year and it will keep the government running. The only thing now that can shut it down is the Democrats in the Senate.

Damned good question!

We have video of Wisconsin Senate Democrats beating their chests over how patriotic they were to leave the state and how that is part of “doing their job”...

The Democrats are Alinsky clones and they have no conscience and no memory of their own past misdeeds.

They’ll figure a way to blame someone else.

Probably blame Bush.

Or Sarah Palin.

Or Rush Limbaugh.

Do not the Democrats have this backwards? The House Republicans have a budget on the table. It is up to the Democrats to accept it or for the Democrats to shut down the government because the Democrats will not accept a viable budget. Is that not so?

Excellent, rational question. But we are speaking of Democrats who are neither excellent or rational . . .

Here’s another question. If Mubarak shutting down the internet in Egypt was a violation of basic human rights why do the democrats want to give Obama an internet kill switch

Simple ... they'll spin it like the Republicans *forced* the Democrats to shutdown government. They had no choice, you see. Had the Republican leadership been more rational, a shutdown would not have been necessary. It's really the Republicans' fault.

You know I'm right, and when it happens you can say you heard it here on FR first!

There is no such thing as a “GOP government shut down”

Like everyone, the Reps live in the past and shutting down the government last time was viewed as a PR disaster. If it happens at all this time, it will be short.

Now FReepers will freak, since we want REAL CUTS from Congress (i.e., entitlements). But guess what, so does Obama, since he can then veto them and prove to the country that he’s needed in 2012 - NOTHING could work better for him than having the Republicans take the plunge into entitlements right now. The Republicans WILL LOSE, and Obama will have an easy ride to RE-ELECTION.

But something tells me that kind of strategic thinking is beyond the Tea Party.

If you actually do it, is it still "posturing"?

Yes, it is a good question. But they don't even have to argue or defend their position. The enemedia willingly carries their water for them.

I contend that we will never have a decent country until the enemedia loses all credibility and maybe even give some of the worst offenders the Julius Streicher treatment.

Kinda. Obama has proposed a budget, complete with $1.65 trillion deficit.

With lies and personal attacks. As always.

The question is kind of stupid, IMO. It make the assumption that Dems are subject to the constraints of logic and reason. They are not. And when the media is 24/7 trumpeting that their lies are truth, and their opponent's truths are lies, it usually works.

Seriously, these are the same people that claim global cooling turns to global warming turns to climate change. All without facts. Why should this be any different?

You are exactly right. The main reason we are in this position for this years budget is because the democrats failed to do their duty and pass a budget before the year ended. Only the democrats with the aid of their lackies in the media can fail to do their duty and blame it on Republicans. Personally, I am glad they didn’t pass a budget as it gives this crowd of Republicans the opportunity to start cutting, but lets not forget that it was the failure of the democrats to accept their responsibility to put together a budget.
