LOL. One of the interesting characteristics of the Suez Canal is that it’s a “flat” canal — meaning it connects the Mediterranean Sea to the Red Sea though a waterway system that has no locks or dams.

I did not know that. Thanks!

Back in the 70’s there was a proposal to build a similar canal across southern Nicaragua to replace the Panama Canal. They were going to blast it in from both coasts towards Lake Managua using nuclear weapons. Can’t imagine why the locals didn’t go for that.

That’s very interesting. I knew there was some kind of plan to build a second canal elsewhere in Central America, but I wasn’t aware that someone seriously considered using nuclear explosives. What the hell were they thinking? LOL.
