Rep. Michele Bachmann Thursday noticeably sidestepped the long-standing issue of President Obama's citizenship, saying "it's not for me to state" whether the president is or is not an American citizen.
"That isn't for me to state, that's for the president to state," the Republican congresswoman from Minnesota and Tea Party favorite said on ABC's "Good Morning America" when asked about lingering doubts among some Americans that the president was not born in the United States.
"When the president makes his statements, I think they need to stand for their own," Bachmann also said when asked if she believed the president's own contentions that he was, in fact, born in the United States.
"We should take the president at his word," Bachmann said. Then asked if she'd be willing to flat out state the president is a citizen and Christian, the congresswoman said she was more focused on economic concerns.
The comments come days after House Speaker John Boehner addressed the issue in a way some Democrats thought was not definitive enough.

The powers that be REALLY want the Tea to stay home in 2012.
NO GODDAMITALL WE SHOULD NOT TAKE HIM AT HIS WORD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The Won doesn’t need legal documents. Just take his word for it.
The same ones blasting Sarah Palin for saying the right answer won’t dare say one bad word about Michele Bachmann. I respect them both and they were both right to stay out of it. They know when they are being set up and they wanted no part of it. It is NOT up to them to decide if Obama was born here or not. We can say it, but they should stay out of it which they did and good for them.
Obama is the name, taqqiya is the game.
The left is playing them very, very well.
Bohener,Palin Rove and now Bachmann.
“We should take the president at his word”, is a non starter for 2012.
CNN is really,REALLY looking for any Republican to say this. Why are they so upset about this? Is there a problem CNN?
You are so right. They are savvy enough to smell a set-up.
When will someone respond to this challenge properly, and answer that 0bama’s history has more holes than swiss cheese?
The bc is just the first document on a long, long list of inaccessible documents.
Well...there goes the perception of her strength and integrity. And, I rather liked her, too.
Overlooking what may well be one of the greatest frauds ever perpetrated on the American people is no way to win hearts and minds among the populace.
Lt. Col. Lakin is sitting in jail.
Yeah, it’s all just a big set up./s
For the smart politicians the real meat is in all the other documents Obie refuses to release (which have been demanded by media and released by Republicans over the past couple of election cycles).

Michelle Bachmann did not dismiss or diss Birthers....she handled the situation as best as she could.
Palin said for the “GOP to distance itself from Birthers” (words to that effect). Palin dismissed the issue and the Birthers....Bachmann did not
Its time for the PalinStinians to get real. Sarah Palin is a Liberal RINO...and this is not the first time she has gone RINO. The PalinStinians would still support and propagandize for Palin if she joined al-Qaeda.
Of course its a set up..that is why BOTH of them made the right choice by basically saying it has nothing to do with them and they have better things to discuss. They are not dumb, they knew what would happen if they said that Obama was not born here..the media would eat it up, accuse them both of being insane and they would repeat that every single day. Instead they BOTH did the right thing and went on to talk about more important things. Why do you think all of a sudden the media is asking every Republican they can get hold of what they think of this, because its a straight up set up, the ones that take the bait look like fools, the ones that stay out of get out scott free
That's not the question. The question is whether or not provisions in the Constitution should be enforced. If a candidate doesn't have the guts to say they should be enforced, (s)he won't get my vote. Ever.
