Poor lady. How will she ever survive after a 7% reduction of her and her husband's $205k combined income (including benefits). Walker should fire her right now as an example. Try making that much money in the real world, Mrs. Hoffman.
I've seen this woman quoted in numerous news articles whining about the 7% reduction meaning $1200/month less income. Do the math.
Fox News is doing a bad job of this. They put NEA supplied teacher salaries in WI on the screen at 30-50k. They don’t match what this lady says. My guess is the 30-50 is starting pay..something they always use to try to justify pay increases when longer term teachers are really making 80-100k.
1200 = 7% of 17,100 (per month)
or 205,700 per year
"Kim Hoffman, a middle school music teacher, said she and her husband, also a teacher, would lose $1,200 a month under the plan too deep a cut to manage. I love teaching, but Id have to start looking for another job, period, she said."
This lady is saying that her family can't survive on $188k/year of WI state taxpayer funds. She should be the poster lady for exactly what is wrong with public teacher unions. She seemingly has no sense of reality, and what is happening in the real world.

We paid for our own darn retirement what makes these people think they are above those who pay their salaries. Our taxes are high enough here now is the time for Gov. Walker to fire them it would be a great time to clean house. I hope he is considering it I am going to call his office and suggest it.
I lost my job at a large corporation last year, had an epiphany, and recently opened my own small (but growing) consulting business in the past 6 months. My wife is saving for retirement through her 401k, but most of my income at this point goes either back into the company or to help pay for public leeches’ retirements (and other things) via taxes. What little is left over is for groceries and other household needs.
I can’t afford to pay for my own retirement right now (I’m thankful to have an income at this point), or to put money into my kids’ college accounts (ages 5 and 7), but I still have to pay for Oregon’s exhorbinant public union retirement.
Enough is enough.
And people wonder why public unions are losing private sector support?
A lot of govt jobs start out low but get big increases yearly. In the Fed Govt engineers usually start at GS5 but go to GS12 in only 4 years. Not a bad salary either considering that as long as you don’t steal or deal drugs you can’t get fired. Oh wait. I know of civilians who were caught dealing drugs on a military base who kept their jobs.
I love teaching, but Id have to start looking for another job, period, she said.”
At $205K assume she is 100K of that household amount.
She will be looking a very long time for a job as a music teacher that pays anywhere like that amount.
Would find out real fast that the real world does not pay those amounts for teaching music. A music education degree and resume to match is only paid at this insane level when on the government teat.
Start looking for another job......good luck. Poor, poor underpaid overworked teacher....gag me with a spoon.
She needs a spanking. Right on her bare bottom!
Did you see the comments on you tube? What is wrong with those people they must not have the capacity to feel shame.
My daughter/son in law own a small business and have three children just like her they don’t have anyone to pay their pension for them or their healthcare. They rotate and work 15 hour days so one of them is home for the kids. I can tell you my daughter is not buying those kinds of coats. The taxes on the kids house are $4,300 already and that’s just on the house.
Anyone who can’t live with a 7% cut in pay at an income level of $205K is pretty terrible at handling their money. We’ve taken a 15% cut over the last couple of years from our 130K high and are still doing just ducky. Why? Because we weren’t profligate idiots.
But it really shows how clueless these govt employees are. She expects sympathy at a $205K income level? ROTFL!
I added a comment on the coat, if you revisit the link. I’m wearing my Dad’s Columbia winter coat, and he died 10 years ago. My wife bought a $99 winter coat 4 years ago and still has it, yet this Kim Hoffman is giving a sob story about having to pay 5.8% of her own freaking retirement?
I’ve posted it before, but these leeches have overplayed their hand this time.
Censorship at you tube? It looks like only liberals can voice their opinion if your comment was as Independent Voter they removed it.
Here is my latest response. :)
First, the original post...
I already pay 1/2 of my pension, having to pay the entire amount & the extra money for health insurance will break the bank. I don't go on vacations not do I have an expensive house. My trouble is I love to teach & I am passionate about what I do. I do not want to stop teaching! Are we going to be able to replace the teachers who can no longer afford to be teaching? How are we going to find new teachers willing to teach in WI, when they will be treated like this? I'm not sure we will.
My response...
@paleopal623 - You don't pay half of your pension. You pay for ZERO of your pension. Every cent of your pension comes from the wallets of workers in the private sector. You're using recycled money, and now your OWNERS in the private sector are saying enough is enough. Try things out in the real world, where music teachers like Kim Hoffman have to advertise for business in their spare time instead of shopping for the newest North Face jackets. I tried to look her up in the DPI datamine -

Guess what?
No Kim Hoffman in Waukesah County or in the district of Oconomowoc.
So I did an overall and found one music teacher in Stone Bank that is a part time teacher. Here’s what it told me and you can look it up for yourself with the link above just using her name in the search and nothing else -
Kimberly Hoffman
2009/10
Bachelor’s Degree
Local experience 0.8
$27,445 salary
$15,893 fringe
position teacher
assign/descript music (instrumental)
low grade/high grade served 5-8 grade
bilingual no
full time equivalency 50%
Work site Stone Bank Elementary
County Waukesha
So this will cost her $1200 per month? Or per YEAR?
As a post script to Kim, I looked up Todd Hoffman which she said worked for Watertown. Only one there that fits the bill.
He makes $71K per year salary & $31K in benefits and he’s full time English teacher.
Man oh man, I feel so bad for them with her working part time and him full and combined they haul in $100K per year and $45K in benefits. Yeah, they are so so very poor and mistreated.
So let’s work this out. 6-7% for health and 12% for pension. 18-19% of $100K per year is about $19K. Nine months of work, so about $2100 per month INVESTED for your future (I’m guessing it comes out of check so it wouldn’t be 12 months). I may be all wet here, but is my math off or is hers? If it’s the 7% health they are talking about then it comes to about $780 per month for the two of them? I’m just not sure now.
Excellent work, and thanks for the information.
So, Kim joined the military, to fund her college, so she could ultimately become a part-time music teacher with less than a year of service?
Liberals are such liars. These Hoffman leeches are making ~$150k off of the taxpayers, and the wife has to go on Youtube and lie?
Tell the truth, Kim. You're a part-time music teacher making $27k in salary, with another $16k in benefits. Your husband Todd makes $71k in salary, with another $30k in benefits. Not a bad gig for 9 months of work, is it? Surely you can pitch in a few sheckles a month for your own retirement, right, as opposed to forcing another one of your students to lose their house because their parents can't afford to pay for you and your lifestyle.
No problem Carling.
Go bust her out publicly.
Or I can do it too. I have a utube account or 4.
