The Puritans were heroic and we owe them an enormous debt.
Some no doubt were. But you will admit that there was a sub-set of them who were every bit as willing to persecute breaches of scrupulosity as modern Muslims.

The Puritans, as a whole, were heroic, and we owe them an enormous debt; not merely “some.” As for choosing words carefully, I would suggest that “persecuting breaches of scrupulousity” consists of words carefully chosen to obfuscate.
