Romney and the Birthers
Public Policy Polling ^ | 02/15/2011 | Tom Jensen

Posted on 02/15/2011 10:26:29 AM PST by speciallybland

Birtherism is alive and well within the GOP ranks, and their 2012 nominee preferences tell a story about the difficulty Mitt Romney faces in trying to appeal to an electorate that's a whole lot further out there than he is.

Birthers make a majority among those voters who say they're likely to participate in a Republican primary next year. 51% say they don't think Barack Obama was born in the United States to just 28% who firmly believe that he was and 21% who are unsure. The GOP birther majority is a new development. The last time PPP tested this question nationally, in August of 2009, only 44% of Republicans said they thought Obama was born outside the country while 36% said that he definitely was born in the United States. If anything birtherism is on the rise.

How does this impact Romney? Well among the 49% of GOP primary voters who either think Obama was born in the United States or aren't sure, Romney's the first choice to be the 2012 nominee by a good amount, getting 23% to 16% for Mike Huckabee, 11% for Sarah Palin, and 10% for Newt Gingrich. But with the birther majority he's in a distant fourth place at 11%, with Mike Huckabee at 24%, Sarah Palin at 19%, and Newt Gingrich at 14% all ahead of him. That pushes him into a second place finish overall at 17% with Mike Huckabee again leading the way this month at 20%. Palin's third with 15%, followed by Gingrich at 12%, Ron Paul at 8%, Mitch Daniels and Tim Pawlenty at 4%, and John Thune at 1%.

You are correct, but it won’t work...If you saw David Gregory attempt to ambush Boehner on MTP yesterday, or saw Chris Matthews’ latest rant against idiot Republicans...the MSM is attempting to depict the GOP as lunatics for thinking this..yet in doin so they raise the story’s profile..it gets more attenton, and soon Obama will have to address it head on..

Agree
Romney’s issues don’t include a natural born question.
right or wrong though it would be used as an issue by 0dumbo supporters that Mitt’s father was born in a Mormon colony is mexico to someone( Mitt’s Grandfather) who may not have been a US Citizen since he, the grandfather, was born in Utah beofore it became a state

Mitt has other issues but I know Dems would ride the natural born issue really hard and we don’t need that

Also, let’s keep in mind that this is a trouble-making left-wing source.

As long as his father became a citizen before Romney was born, he is a Natural Born Citizen.

You sir are a GOP Kool-Aid drinker. Romney’s wothless, and Elmer Gantry’s a fraud. If any of them are the nominee, I’m staying home election day 2012. If the usurper is re-elected, we’ll deserve it for not running a true constitutional conservative.

The GOP birther majority is a new development.

Not "new" ... just "under-reported".

What’s a birther? Sounds like an OB or a midwife.

“David Gregory attempt to ambush Boehner on MTP yesterday,”

The ambush was partly successful. If Boehner had said “I think that’s the media’s job to inform people, and the best way would be to ask the President directly”, it would have failed.

What we got instead was a sort of mushy “well it’s not my job to change the way people think” deflect-the-question defensive stuff.

The real test will be if the GOP decides who to put up as the front-runner based on Birther affiliations and the outcome of polls like this. The media would like to have Barry defeat Mittens, and if GOP thinks Mittens can win because sane non-birthers embrace him while nutzoid Birthers do not, the dems will have won again in setting up the field before teh Pubbies are even suited up.

BirtherGate Seven: Place of Birth

Barry Soetoro Kenya
Valerie Jarret Iran
Rahn Emmanuel Israel
George Soros Hungary
David Axelrod Canada
David Plouffe Canada
Emil Krogh

OK OK Emil Krogh is not involved in BirtherGate. He was one of the Watergate Seven. I just wanted to include a ‘blast from the past’. Remember Emil?

The real test will be

whether Boehner and/or Issa subpoena the Hawaiian birth records.

Boehner controls the outcome of this important constitutional issue. His failure to pursue it makes him look impotent and that benefits Obama on a whole range of issues.

Mitt Romney is, in fact, a natural born citizen. His grandparents were U.S. citizens, Mormon missionaries serving in Mexico, when Mitt’s father, George, was born. George Romney was born a U.S. citizen, and was a U.S. citizen when Mitt was born in the US. Well, technically Detroit is in the U.S.

whether Boehner and/or Issa subpoena the Hawaiian birth records.

Boehner controls the outcome of this important constitutional issue. His failure to pursue it makes him look impotent and that benefits Obama on a whole range of issues.

“The state of Hawaii says that the President was born there. That’s good enough for me.” John Boehner, Meet the Press

House Majority Leader Eric I. Cantor, Virginia Republican, said Sunday he thinks President Obama is a natural-born U.S. citizen and that questions on the issue have no place in Capitol Hill policy-making discussions.

“I don’t think it’s an issue that we need to address at all,” he said on NBC‘s “Meet the Press.” “It is not an issue that even needs to be on the policy-making table right now whatsoever.”

Issa has tried to draw a line separating events that he considers appropriate subjects for investigation and those which he deems inappropriate. He has criticized his predecessors for wasting time looking into matters involving the Clintons that predated their arrival at the White House, such as the Whitewater and cattle-futures episodes. “These are items that occurred before the President was elected,” Issa told me. “I would not have viewed them as particularly significant.” He added that issues involving Obama’s past are also off limits, such as “the birther question.” Implicit in this rule is that his past should also be left undisturbed.”—New Yorker Magazine profile of Darrell Issa

WTF? First sentence of the second paragraph in the article posted; the author claims 51% of GOP primary voters say they don’t think Barack Obama was born in the United States. Then the second sentence of the third paragraph states 49% when discussing the impact on Romney. Does the author know something PPP doesn’t?
