The ingredients of the drink, founded by John Pemberton, a medicinal pharmacist in 1886, have always been a mystery.
However, Thisamericanlife.org claims to have discovered a list in a photograph in a newspaper article giving the ingredients and exact quantities to make the drink.

Speaking of which, this makes me want to go buy a bag of “Things” (they go better with Coke).
They set up The Ignited Negro Fund.
Because that’s the syrup. Needs carbonated water.
Don’t know if they still do it, but it used to be that when you went to Cuzco, Peru, they would give you coca leaf tea .. helps offset the lightheadedness in that high Andes altitude. Natives chew the leaves all the time.
Little-known fact about the infamous “Pepsi Challenge,” a blind taste test between Coke and Pepsi:
Pepsi used this contest to great effect in television commercials, because it had been lagging behind Coke for a long time.
The reason the taste tests were effective is that they had the subjects take small sips of each cola.
After the broohaha and Pepsi’s new notoriety, professional testers realized that, duh, people do not sip colas. They take big gulps. Pepsi was much sweeter, and people prefer less sweet colas. Sipping was, by design or not, a way to fool their palates and avoid the sweetness factor.
Coke’s foolish response was to produce a cola less sweet than the original formula, New Coke, which of course was a disaster. Their blind tests proved people preferred New Coke 55% to 45%, but again, they were sipping it.
Coke later redid the test with its classic drink and asked people to drink the two colas normally — in their homes — and, what do you know, people clearly preferred Coke.
Malcolm Gladwell spoke of this in Blink; more information about this can be found here:

I was once told by a Jewish friend, that you can use coke to show why Jews don’t eat ham. He told me the next time you have a ham steak handy, fry up in a good dose of coca cola, after a few minutes he said you will see the worms in the meat begin to crawl out. yum yum ..lol
Many of the Throwback versions of Pepsi, and I am sure Coke, too, have sugar. It is a far better product than that thick stuff they usually sell.
Coke had a special edition made with sugar a couple years ago. It was MUCH better.
