WASHINGTON (Reuters) President Barack Obama made a sales pitch on Saturday for his forthcoming fiscal year 2012 budget, pledging that it would help the United States "live within our means while investing in our future."
The budget, to be unveiled on Monday, contains a mix of cost cuts and targeted spending aimed at achieving Obama's twin goals of reducing the deficit and boosting U.S. competitiveness.
But Republicans, who control the House of Representatives, have balked at any spending increases and accused the Democratic president of not being serious about reining in the deficit, which is forecast to reach $1.48 trillion this fiscal year.
The 2012 fiscal year begins on October 1.
In his weekly radio and Internet address, Obama highlighted his plan to freeze non-security discretionary spending for five years, which the White House says will reduce the deficit by $400 billion over the next 10 years.
"We've stripped down the budget by getting rid of waste," he said in the address, adding that the government would get rid of thousands of empty buildings and freeze salaries on "hard-working government employees" as part of the push.
Obama said the budget proposes to invest in roads, high-speed trains, broadband Internet, clean energy and education. After a decade of rising deficits, Obama said, "I'm proposing a new budget that will help us live within our means while investing in our future."
Republicans, who have a sales pitch of their own to make, said Obama's budget was not taking the deficit problem seriously enough.

DOA
Oh brother....you mean the budget that should have passed in October 2010? That budget that they didn’t bother passing? They need to get off their a$$es and pass a budget ASAP. It is ridiculous that they have very few responsibilities in the House and one of them is the budget and they could not do it. The adults that now run the House should have passed the budget the following day after swearing in.
Uh, If you spend more than you take in you are NOT living within your means!
Just listen to the story line and the opposite is true. Just like a bunch of the old Soviet propaganda.
Give him NOTHING
(cough) BS! (cough)
A 1-1/2 TRILLION shortfall is “living within our means”?? Only in Democrat la-la land. Those people are nuts.
$1.4 Trillion will be the deficit the Republicans propose, or maybe they’ll really cut and got with a $1 Trillion deficit. That would mean they cut $500 Billion from the budget. If they keep this up they will get their azzes handed to them in 2012. If you are going to spend us into oblivion, you may as well have the press lavishing praises on you like the Democrats do. Translation, balance the budget NOW, or turn it over to a new party. I personally will not support a party that spends more than we take in, I don’t care who they want to blame for the predicament. NOT ONE MORE DIME, over and above the amount brought in by taxes.
Can any of the many “investments” governments have made over the years be sold to pay off the debt? If they can’t be sold, they’re not investments.
If they can’t be sold for more than we paid for them, they’re not good investments.
Well, there’s no way to quibble over the words. I remember when Clinton used the term ‘investment’ when he was talking
about SPENDING.
Obama’s and Clinton’s use the term investment is a lie as big as any of
the Devil’s lies. Their intention was and is to deceive.
