The results of the CPAC straw poll of presidential candidates are in, and the winner is Ron Paul, with 30% of the vote. Mitt Romney was the runner-up with 23%, and all other candidates tied with about 6% each.

84% of the voters identified themselves as fiscal conservatives, placing their highest priority on economic growth and restraining the growth of government.

East Coast College Republicans attending CPAC aren't necessarily conservative - nor is David Keene or Grover Norquist.

Meaningless to the extent that any straw poll of Conservatives is meaningless.

11,000+ were at this thing. Biggest turnout ever.
Was CPAC ever meaningful?

I’ve watched a decent amount of this, and it didn’t seem like I was watching all 2nd stringers.

Palin wasn’t there, but SarahPAC was a sponsor. Huckabee I don’t think was there.

The Bushes never went. Reagan went over 10 times.

Pretty much everyone was there (not Sarah, but SarahPAC, and not Huckabee) and apparently Ron Paul won again.

I saw a lot of candidates on my tv. The victory belongs to Ron Paul.

imho, we need to continually press the GOP, RNC our State Rep and Conservative parties to find ONE candidate who CAN/WILL win against Mr. Obama in 2012. We cannot afford to have a multitude of candidates who will bash each other and give Obama points to use against his opponent. And, we cannot afford another candidate like McCain!! We need someone who will cause Mr. Obama to return to Chicago!
Now....who is that candidate I don’t know....but the RNC/GOP etc should be developing someone NOW! I want America back!

I am afraid that candidate that you seek will NOT emerge from the RNC/DNC Coalition of corruption !

I didn’t say it was low attendance. The NH Republican nomination gets high attendance too. Mostly due to democrats.

"CPAC 2011 is expected to have record attendance, and one reason is the movement’s growing youth contingent; 54 percent of the voters in last year’s straw poll were between the ages of 18 and 25."

The conservative movement cannot afford to lose the younger generation to the "Hope and Change" mantra of the left.

That is one age group that Paul has tapped into very well and brings them along. Many may change as they get older but Paul gets them into the fray and they are very active.

I’m surprised that no other candidate tries to bring them in and use their talents. They can be hard workers. Someone’s PAC could sure make headway I’d think.

And Romney too. Romney has been busing his people in since 2007 at least. His dollars were able to win CPAC in 2007, 2008, 2009, but his dollars were unable to buy the victory in 2010 and 2011. Both this year and last, Ron Paul finished 1st, Mitt Romney 2nd, by roughly the same margin, 30% or so to low 20s.

http://www.usnews.com/news/articles/2011/02/11/cpac-straw-poll-not-predictive-of-eventual-nominee

Even back in 2007, the news organizations noticed that Mitt was spending money to try to win.

http://www.nysun.com/national/romney-giuliani-top-conservative-straw-poll/49736/
From 2007
“Mr. Romney ran an intensive ground operation at CPAC, flooding the convention with college-aged campaign workers — paying many of their registration fees and even busing some of them in and paying for their hotel rooms, according to a report in The New York Times — wearing blue Romney shirts, carrying posters for their candidate, and voting in the straw poll. He also spoke yesterday afternoon to rousing applause and hosted a reception for conference attendees yesterday evening.”

Yes, I have noticed that. While I disagree with Ron Paul on some issues, I think it is absolutely foolish for the conservative movement to alienate his supporters. As you pointed out, no other candidates are doing much to reach this demographic. The future of the conservative movement depends on bringing them aboard.

"We don't intend to turn the Republican Party
over to the traitors in the battle just ended.
We will have no more of those candidates who are pledged
to the same goals as our opposition and who seek our support.
Turning the Party over to the so-called moderates
wouldn't make any sense at all.""

It depends if you consider the tea party to be the “not-so-independent-gop-connected-at-the-wallet” group.. or the 100s of 1000s of real independent LOCAL tea party groups (who may or may not refer to themselves as tea parties) all accross this great country !! I would like to see the independent folks gather at the Save America Foundation Convention in Tampa, Florida on March 18-20 ! :)
