ERCOT urges Texans to cut electricity use
Texas Record News ^ | 2/8/2011 | timesrecordnews.com

WICHITA FALLS — The electric grid operator for Texas is urging consumers and businesses are encouraged to reduce their electricity use during peak demand hours over the next few days from 6 – 9 a.m. and 4 – 8 p.m. to help reduce the risk of electricity emergencies or the need for rotating outages.

“The National Weather Service is anticipating severe cold weather statewide this week, as another arctic air mass is expected to reach deep into Texas, dropping temperatures back into the teens and twenties,” said Trip Doggett, CEO of the Electric Reliability Council of Texas.

"In anticipation of this severe cold weather, ERCOT will procure additional generation capacity for real-time operations to help maintain reliable delivery of power during this extreme weather event over the next few days,” he said in a news release.

Obama and Coal: Obama Admits His Policies Will “Bankrupt” Coal Industry

Obama on Coal Power:

“So if somebody wants to build a coal-powered plant, they can. It’s just that it will bankrupt them.”

Transcript of audio of an Obama interview with the SF Chronicle:

"Let me sort of describe my overall policy.

What I’ve said is that we would put a cap and trade system in place that is as aggressive, if not more aggressive, than anybody else’s out there.

I was the first to call for a 100% auction on the cap and trade system, which means that every unit of carbon or greenhouse gases emitted would be charged to the polluter. That will create a market in which whatever technologies are out there that are being presented, whatever power plants that are being built, that they would have to meet the rigors of that market and the ratcheted down caps that are being placed, imposed every year.

So if somebody wants to build a coal-powered plant, they can; it’s just that it will bankrupt them because they’re going to be charged a huge sum for all that greenhouse gas that’s being emitted.

That will also generate billions of dollars that we can invest in solar, wind, biodiesel and other alternative energy approaches.

The only thing I’ve said with respect to coal, I haven’t been some coal booster. What I have said is that for us to take coal off the table as a (sic) ideological matter as opposed to saying if technology allows us to use coal in a clean way, we should pursue it.

So if somebody wants to build a coal-powered plant, they can.

It’s just that it will bankrupt them."

Obama Energy Secretary Promises "Massive" Coal Plant Closures

"Obama Energy Secretary Steven Chu has launched the next phase of the White House’s publicly stated agenda to bankrupt the coal industry via EPA regulations after announcing the prospect of “massive” coal plant closures even as Texas and other states suffer rolling blackouts as a result of maxed-out power plants that cannot cope with demand.

The Obama administration’s strict enforcement of draconian EPA regulations has led to new clean-burning coal-fired plants being mothballed and other existing ones being shut down, which has in turn led to Texas and other states becoming energy-dependent, leading to shortages and blackouts exacerbated by freezing temperatures."

When I bought my all electric house in the early 80’s we were being promised low electric prices in the future from cheap nuclear power. Of course, only one nuclear power plant managed to get built - way late and over budget.

Texas produces a lot of wind energy, but you’re probably not going to want to operate those things during an ice storm.

This was sent to me by another member, who is afraid to post any news from Texas that is not good, for fear of being attacked. Yes I understand it is several days old, and you would like it deleted.

Feel free to request this article be deleted or omitted.

I understand your concerns.

I’ve been in power outages before, but never rolling blackouts.

Do you get any warning? Do they say in advance what areas will be out? And how long do the outages last?

I am not asking for it to be deleted. But when you are hopeful about how well they will handle an event that happened it in the past, it is confusing at best.

There was an general announcement for the area that rolling blackout will occur. But individuals cannot reasonably be individually notified as to the time the power will go off and come back on. The power need fluctuates too fast to schedule and notify beyond large area notifications.

We lost our power at home during the previous round of blackouts, but this event actually didn't happen but was a warning of a possibility, 4 days ago, that did not happen.

I faintly remember something about tank trucks pouring oil in the desert somewhere.

Anyone remember that?

How much more electricity does Texas use keeping warm in the winter than it does keeping cool in the summer?

The thing is that supplying less power means they don’t generate the same income therefore they’ll have to raise rates. If a household pays say, 7 cents per kilowatt hour they’ll up the rate to 8 cents. They’ll use less and pay more.

If it makes you feel better, here’s another story from about a day and a half ago..I hope this news isn’t too old for you.

February 10, 2011

DALLAS - The Electric Reliability Council of Texas, the agency that oversees the state’s power, says the energy grid is nearly maxed out.

The agency has warned consumers that if they don’t conserve power this morning, rolling blackouts will likely happen once again.

Will they pay us if we reduce consumption?

No, like in CA, when they told everyone to conserve a few years back, everyone did, and they raised the rates because they were losing profit.

And that weather has passed, and no blackouts occurred due to generation relative to demand.

It was an interesting history lesson, but history from this point.

I expect that these blackouts will become common throughout the country come summer when the windmills can’t keep up and the EPA shuts down coal plants.
