Its a situation facing many people: even though you have experience, youre still struggling to get a job, let alone a single interview.
Even though the economy is improving and there are increased job openings, gone are the days when simply submitting your cover letter and resume will result in HR knocking on your door for an interview.
Job seekers need to be a lot more proactive and strategic with who and how they network to ensure they stay top-of-mind to not only hiring managers, but also to people within their own personal networks who can lend a job-filled hand.
Below are five reasons why youre probably not getting noticed along with suggestions on how to not only improve your chances, but also connect you to the job you actually want.

I think these are the real five reasons:
1. You are not an Illegal Alien from Mexico/Central America
2. You are not Communist Chinese
3. You are not Indian
4. You are not Muslim
5. You are white
The real reasons
That’s how it is: when you are 50 to 60, you are expendable. By the time I was 22, I was already investing in mutual funds and building my portfolio because by the time I hit 30, there was no way I could live my life for another decade doing a 9 to 5 job, while being yelled at 10 in the morning for financial reports ala “Office Space”. (Yes, it has happened). That’s why I became a consultant.
By the time you hit 50, you should be on the Board of Directors. It pains me to see parents nowadays say “make good and you’ll work for a company for 40 years” instead of “Become an independent and stable consultant by 30 and create your own business”.
Another issue I see in the company where I work and I think is common these days;
I have been given more job duties many of which do not relate to my education or experience (IT). Make fewer people do more work. Then when you try to fill an empty spot (we have had an opening for several months now) you can’t find anybody because the expectations are unrealistic. Nobody could possibly have that broad an experience base. I started seeing it about 10 years ago. It seems the only qualified person would be someone who has held the exact same job at the same company for the last 10 years =/
So when our budget is approved next month they will discover that the company is getting along just fine with the headcount we have. Even though the existing staff is getting burned out covering too much.
You are not getting hired because the Globalists have shipped your job to China or India. In addition no one in the USA can afford to comply with all the government red tape needed to hire you. Congratulations you are now an official NWO slave.
Probably the most accurate of all reasons posted so far.
Ok wanna think outside this paradigm....own your own business. You have a worker bee mindset and you are always someone else’s female dog.
Some people’s best bets might be seeking work with small businesses, the small ones which are too small to have layers of management or HR departments. These types of businesses are too small to set up internal P & P to screen job applicants on race, gender, etc.
Someone correct me if I’m wrong, but, aren’t certain companies, say with 20 or fewer employers, exempt from a lot of the record keeping and filing government paperwork proving they don’t discriminate, etc???? I thought the smallest of businesses were exempt from the bureaucracy of tracking the minutia of race and gender and ethnicity of their employees and applicants. Is this true???
SPOT-ON FRiend!
I’m 35 and have a very good well paying management job however my goal is to break free of the corporate rat race by the time I’m 40.
50 is the new 60 and I’ve seen far too many companies offer early outs for those in their 50’s or simply won’t hire anyone over 50.
By the time you reach 50 you better be prepared to have your own business of some kind.
Couple this with high unemployment and those in their 50’s don’t stand a chance...
1 You are white.
2 You are male.
3 You are middle aged.
4 You don’t kiss ass, you just do your job.
5 You have a life, you spend time with your family, you have friends outside of work, you don’t obsess every minute about office politics.
that is what the death panels are for. They protect seniors for excessive lifespan.
typo.
protect seniors FROM excessive lifespan.
Workers comp insurance and lawyers have made hiring very problematic. Who wants to hire someone who will take you to the cleaners - Only a small percentage of job seekers aren't angling for a permanenet disability.
In uncertain times, no one wants to gamble with their livelihood - especially the guy with skin in the game. Ever.
Because HR depts are run completely by homos and silly bitches
Those days are long gone. There is no more long-term loyalty on either side.
Interesting discussion. I don’t know if all of the comments are valid in my environment (consulting, DC metro area) but I am 58 and operate as an independent through my LLC. If I am “hired” I don’t cost the company benefits and I don’t count in their statistics.
Yeah, that just happened where I work with one guy. He got a bad review and blew up. He quit, and blew ALL the bridges behind him on his way out. IMHO, good riddance, he was a lousy employee anyway.
I'm in IT, in a fairly small market. Unless he's moving (I've no idea, I'm not all that friendly with him) ... I'd call it "unlikely" that he'll work in this area again. Everyone knows everyone else, and he'll trip over his co-workers again, for certain.
Dumb. I know that its tempting to blow bridges. But a civil "I've decided to pursue other interests" or somesuch vanilla comment, is always the more prudent course of action.
You wont stand a chance by 45. Kids are younger and it is damn simple to understand they will take your job. I will retire by 50 or younger, especially with this kenyan klown of a president who is absolutely clueless.
Thanks for the input. I had not thought about scammers out there, such as the guy you dealt with. That just adds another reason for employers to try to avoid hiring older workers.
We have a guy that is melting down right now.
