MSNBC LIVE WITH CENK UYGUR(Don`t let Republicans take Social Security's $2.5 trillion surplus)
lexisnexis MSNBC transcript ^ | February 9, 2011 | CENK UYGUR

Posted on 02/10/2011 6:45:51 PM PST by sickoflibs

Now, I`ve been telling you the Republicans are going to cut your Social Security. And guess what happened? Now a Republican Senator admits that`s exactly what they want to do. We`ll tell you exactly what he said in a minute.

(clip)

UYGUR: For so long, I`ve been telling you guys, the Republicans and sometimes the Democrats or certainly the deficit commission, they`re coming to cut your Social Security. And to prove me right, Senator Shelby, republican of Alabama steeped up and agreed, yes, that`s exactly what we`re looking to do. We want to raise your retirement age and he says, we want to up to age every several years. So, hey, you know what? If 69 doesn`t knew the job, maybe we`ll make you work to 71, maybe we`ll make you work to 75. And it goes on and on and on. He says, he`s worried that if you do any kind of 6th grade Math. Then, you`ll know the Social Security is out of money.

He says, he`s worried about his kids. Here`s what he says about his kids, he said, quote, "they`re not going to receive anything or if they do, very little, there`s no proof that they will get much if anything." That is simply, positively not true. Social Security has a $2.5 trillion surplus. Don`t let them lie to you about it. It absolutely positively, the surplus that it has and that the American government must pay. It is our whole full faith and credit of the United States government is behind that surplus. Don`t let them take it from you. And let me give you one quick example. Do you know that if they raise your retirement age up to 70, do you know how much you would lose in Social Security rather than if you retired at 65? You would lose $63,573. Can you imagine a bigger robbery? Don`t let them do it. We`ll be back.

I posted Ed Schultz (MSNBC) claiming this too just a month ago. Congressional Democrats make the same claim.

My question is : When are spineless Republicans going to call out the obvious that there is no fund? That the money is being borrowed to pay SS recipients.

All this talk of cutting spending is fine but we will not avoid financial catastrophe unless we reform entitlements (Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid) and absolutely slash the regulatory state.

We need lower taxes, fewer regulations and a balanced budget. Getting real on entitlements is essential to accomplishing this.

I can’t stand Shelby for reasons too numerous to mention. He is a fantastic example of someone that has been in Washington way too long and is totally disconnected with reality.

Damn! Where is that cash stashed? I was thinking we could borrow against that, just ‘till we get over this hard patch. Why didn't some brain trust in Congress think of this before?...

"All this talk of cutting spending"

It's just talk. When it comes to funding, most politicians spend like drunken sailors. (Sorry about impugning drunken sailors.) Most politicians are only too happy to green light Helicopter Ben.

Don't disagree, But that leads me into a few of my favorite SS points:

Point 1 : Is related to this thread. You cannot touch SS as long as no-one (or very few) will admit there is no SS trust fund. As long as this myth is allowed to exist (and Dems are citing the CBO), there is no moral authority to cut SS again.

Point 2 : You cannot cut SS until you cut other programs and spending Federal workers pay/benefits. You cannot look as though you are making SS recipients, most who paid huge FICA taxes for it, pay for the DC spending orgy.

Point 3: If Republicans unilaterally rammed through a SS reform bill, like Obama-care was, Pelosi would be the next House Speaker

This is the political reality.

Yep, I made that same humorous point when I posted Ed Schultz making this same stupid claim. Republicans are scared to call out the obvious is very distressing.

RE :”You can remove that channel from your scan list. Trust me -— you won’t miss it.

Believe it or not, except for Cavuto(the real deal conservative), Megyn Kelly, sometimes Beck and Brett Baur (may others), I prefer MSNBC to FNC.

Why??

If I watch Hannity it's totally predictable. He just reads off the talk radio circuits talking points. But if you can stand MSNBC (and I have to turn it off when they gloat), you can know what they are up to. You can actually learn their strategy and their next attack. If you can read between the lines, you can learn. You will never learn sh.. from Hannity. He's a moron.
