One Question: If is is THIS EASY to block both civilian and MILITARY GPS, what is to stop the Russians and Chinese..maybe even Iran... from similarly jamming the GPS signals?

‘cause I’m a hard working SOB, I see the same doofus’ every morning. God bless ‘em for holding down a 12+ hour day like me, it just cracks me up. Really? You don’t know where you work? OK maybe they have the nifty Garmin unit w/ live traffic updates, I’ll grant them that much.
I am not at all concerned how other people exercise their freedoms, I’m more concerned with a-holes trying to restrict those freedoms, but I don’t think that was what the article was about anyway.

Check on that! We use Topcon (don’t get me started) and Trimble units (we do mostly RTK work) that can do some very high accuracy stuff with post processing. We have a fistful of static units too. We don’t layout many 2 mile+ baselines so what we have, in the right hands, can get some awesome results.

Avionics is a whole different ball game I’m sure. I’ll stick to the terra-firma, and leave the airborne stuff to the pros!

Loran is still in use for navigation backup from what I’ve read. Larger vessels still run it just in case....?

I bought my aging mother (don’t tell her I said that) one of those cheap TomTom units, she called me and complained it didn’t work inside her house & how was she supposed to learn how to use it? I almost spilled my drink laughing so hard.

My husband is a private pilot and has been getting information on the subject from FAA bulletins.

Apparently this software was first tested WITHOUT filters. WITH filters, the FAA is confident problem goes away.

As ready as I am to assume that Zero is behind every possible attempt to deprive us of some freedom or other, the military and the FAA, to say nothing of the TSA and Garmin (and all the cell phone companies), would not allow something like this to be turned lose -

I am reasonably confident that this is a non-issue.

Being daily immersed in technology tends to make one arrogant.

I think it's prudent for your mother (or anyone else) to actually use technology that is new to them before risking their lives on it. Fiddling with buttons while trying to use a device while driving is the ultimate in negligence.

With a mature programming culture, certainly an actual tutorial can be devised to "learn" to use the device on a PC which would be indistinguishable from actually driving and navigating. It can even include the infamous "recalculating," which, more often than not should be ignored. "Make a U-turn??"

Having come from a surveying/engineering background, I rarely have need for that type of help, but I can't put my brain in neutral and assume that the majority of non-technical users should understand it all as easily as I.

Just saying...

Oh yeah, I took her to the park down the road, waited for the sats to come up, then showed her how to get where she wanted to go BEFORE heading out. She was frustrated because she was not getting any sats in the living room. Thats why I laughed so hard. No concept of what was really going on.

Nice to chat with a fellow surveyor.

I really relied on my Garmin unit in Oahu, wholy geez! If you (at least me) tried to get from the airport to the northshore solo!? Good luck! I ended up going over the H3 and finally found a grocery store where I could dig it out. WOW was I way off!

The sole legitimate function of the FCC is to prevent this sort of thing.

The Politburo gets steak, the peasants get firing squads.

Always have, always will (until they're all dead).

Today is a good day to die.
