Drought threatens China's wheat crop

A severe drought in China is threatening the country's wheat crop and could affect global grain prices, the U.N. food agency warned.

The United Nations' Food and Agriculture Organization, in a special alert on China, said the drought is "potentially a serious problem."

The drought, which has been dragging on for four months, has affected 35.1 percent -- 15.8 million acres -- of China's wheat crop, China's Ministry of Agriculture announced this week.

FAO said 2.57 million people and 2.79 million head of livestock faced shortages of drinking water.

Chinese state-run news said that China's key agricultural regions were facing their worst drought in 60 years. On Tuesday, Xinhua news agency warned that Shandong province, one of the country's largest grain producers, was bracing for its worst drought in 200 years. The province has received only 0.47 of an inch of rain since last September.

China's wheat industry accounts for one-sixth of global output. An FAO database shows that in 2009, China produced nearly twice as much of the grain as the United States or Russia and more than five times as much as Australia.

In the last few days I've started seeing more stories about the drought in China. If it continues it will have a very destabilizing impact on global economies and could lead to massive social unrest.

Beb Bernanke sure picked a lousy time to implement QE2

If you read the article you will know that China produces twice as much wheat as the USA. Thus, I conclude, that we won't have enough surplus wheat to help them very much. Thats how bad this situation might get.

China doesn't give a damn about their people, especially the ones in rural areas where the coming wheat shortage is most likely to hit hardest. Massive famine is just another method of population control to them. There is no way the Chi-coms will trade wheat for debt forgiveness. It is nice to see something threatening the Chinese, though. Our gubmint doesn't seem to know how to do anything when it comes to the Chinese besides bow and kiss their a$$.......

Odd that this didn’t come up during Obama’s recent
meeting with Hu......or did it and we just didn’t
hear about it.

After all they’ve know about this for months.

From the article:

China's grain situation is critical to the rest of the world -- if they are forced to go out on the market to procure adequate supplies for their population, it could send huge shock waves through the world's grain markets," said Robert S. Zeigler, the director general of the International Rice Research Institute in Los Banos, Philippines told the Times.

This means that we, here in the USA, will also be paying a lot more for our food because of the drought in China.

I wonder how the Free Trade Communists, who blindly support Free Trade with Communist China...are going to spin this one.

Probably one of the dumbest ideas pushed by the Free Trader Communist Globalists was to shift so much of the planet’s Agri production to Communist China....and allow the Communist Chinese to ship their food products to the US and around the world

In the USA, a Communist Chinese drought would drive up food prices...as so much of our food stuffs and food prep ingredients come from Communist China. It was the brillant (/sarc) idea of the Free Trader Communist Globalists to move the USA from being 100% self-sustaining in food production....to being now dependent on imports

At least the USA will not suffer as much as some other nations...who have basically abandoned their domestic Agri production and now rely solely on Communist Chinese food supplies. You think the food-based riots in Tunisia and Egypt are bad....wait until the Communist Chinese cannot supply the Third World with any food!

The idiot ideas of Free Trader Communist Globalists are finally being totally exposed. Instead of letting Third Worlders die of starvation....this may be a good time for many nations to start trying and executing Free Traders for treason and sedition. No sense feeding stupidity

Remember that this is still COMMUNIST CHINA, and, like all of the Communist regimes throughout history....they never discuss their failures. Obviously, a massive drought that could affect a lot of people worldwide, is not going to be admitted to by the Commie Chinese

Fortunately, we have some media reports that are getting the info out. Thank God we still have some real investigative media

Just as the USSR had Walter Duranty cover up to the West about the famines of the USSR in the 1920’s and 1930’s (killing millions)....the Communist Chinese have the Free Trade Communists that will try to provide cover for them.

It sure is a good thing that there is no historical precedent for an ascendant military political power to turn aggressively war-like in pursuit of natural resources, spurred on by domestic food shortage.

Otherwise, we'd be screwed.

Today is a good day to die.
I didn't say for whom.

The farmers here will be happy, and it's not like the ChiComs care (SANGVIS FLVAT - let the blood flow; sorry, I only know the Latin, not the Chinese). On the other hand, Bernanke is desperately trying to keep the five largest banks from collapsing under the housing bubble by (re)inflation. Crop failures and stagflation: I swear I hit my head and woke up in 1979 again.

“If you read the article you will know that China produces twice as much wheat as the USA. “

But the bad news for China is that they have triple the population.
