WASHINGTON Democratic Sen. Jim Webb of Virginia announced plans to retire at the end of his term, deepening the challenge to his party as it struggles to maintain a majority in 2012 elections.
In an e-mail announcement, Webb said he would return to the private sector, but offered no additional details of his plans.

By contrast there are only 10 GOP-held seats on the ballot in 2012.

He can read the writing on the wall.
One can only wonder what event in this Annapolis grad’s life turned him to the darker side.
Betrayal comes first to mind...
Webb is going to sally forth to seek his fortune?
Jim, don’t let the door hit you in the tail as you go.
Webb has always been a strange bird. Even today he still argues with the decision given by the referee of the boxing match he had with Oliver North over 40 years ago at the Academy.
Remember his aide got caught carrying Webb's weapon into the Capital a few years back?
Now he does not give a crap what the voters of Virginia think. This is not all good news.
Hopefully he will take this time to write another book or two. He's a great writer, IMHO.
Dim Webb is retiring because he will face certain defeat by a huge margin by the voters of the Commonwealth. Definite GOP pickup in 2012.
One term in the Senate - probably will get $100,000 per year retirement out of our pockets for life.
I think we can still come up with some sort of un-electable candidate and blow it, if we work really hard.
I’ve always held him in high regard even though I can’t figure out why he switched to the Dems. The man can flat write a good military yarn. He was a good SecNav under Reagan. He is just so incredibly smart and yet turned to the Dems. What an enigma this guy is. Does he think he belongs to the Democratic Party of JFK? That party has been dead and gone for a very long time as we here at FR all know. I just can’t see him in the new Communist Democratic Party. But maybe these are his true colors. Well he’s retiring so I guess we’ll see what his next move is. I hope he stays out of politics and just writes some more good books.
GOP should have a good candidate, whether Allen, Corey Stewart, or Rob Wittman.
We won’t. The GOP has a deep bench in VA.
I'm sure someone will be along to proclaim every one of them a RINO for one reason or another.
like rats from a sinking ship....
Interesting story about Webb. Back in his Reagan days he helped a manufacturer of ball bearings (may have broke the law) Seems their ball bearings were the only ones that were used by our nuclear subs. Because of the Dems in congress they lost all contracts and were down to executives manning the shop floor, getting ready to close. Webb shuffled some contracts (without the proper bidding process) to them to keep them going until saner heads prevailed. Typical DEM logic was that we could buy the bearings overseas cheaper. Only problem they were made by a communist country and we would have to give them the exact specs on their manufacture.
I always wonder what turned him to the dark side. I heard he has a very liberal wife. She is a survivor of communism so I doubt it, but others might verify this..
In accordance with the left’s own standards (such as they are and applied to Gov. Palin), Webb is a QUITTER, pure and simple.
And I’m sorry to say he was a Marine, and a highly decorated one, at that.
We wont. The GOP has a deep bench in VA.
I’m sure someone will be along to proclaim every one of them a RINO for one reason or another.

Amen. I am so sick of that kind of attitude. No politician is perfect. Sarah Palin backed John McCain in his re-election bid. Funny, you didn’t hear much from the RINO hunting crowd on that issue.
George Bush had a lot of faults. But he gave us Alito and Roberts, a stronger military etc. I will enthusiastically vote for any Republican candidate over Obama in 2012 (Palin, Daniels, even Romney). Obama has to go.
Calling someone a RINO all the time is starting to get like the “boy who cried wolf” scenario.
He knows what the voters of VA think of his voting in lockstep with the Democrats since he took office so he’s retiring.
