The first picture has been released of Meryl Streep playing Baroness Thatcher in The Iron Lady, the forthcoming Hollywood film about the former British prime minister's life.
The biopic, which also stars Jim Broadbent as Lady Thatcher's husband Sir Denis, began filming at the end of January.
It is being made by Pathe and Film4 and is directed by British director Phyllida Lloyd, who is best known for her theatre work.
Streep, one of the most successful actresses in Hollywood, was seen as one of the few women capable of convincingly playing Lady Thatcher.
However, producers faced concerns over how an American would be received playing the part, and suggestions that the role should have gone go to a British actress.
The film will focus mainly on the period immediately prior to the Falklands war. . . .

Sure, it’ll probably be a smear job, but I can’t dislike Meryl Streep. (one of the few I tend to overlook for her politics)
She’s fantastic- and has 2 Oscars, another 84 wins & 90 nominations to prove it.
Im thinking now of Hugh Laurie as tvs House, whom I would never have taken as British had I not been so informed.
How about the elegant, accomplished British actress, Helen Mirren? Seems like she would have been ideal for the part.
Regarding "lookalikes", Colin Firth and Helena Bonham Carter look nothing like King George and Queen Elizabeth but "The King's Speech" has already won many accolades and has been nominated for 12 Oscars.
One of the more remarkable hiding of accent was by the actress who portrayed Deanna Troi on Star Trek: TNG.
Her natural accent is very heavy British of some region and is glaringly different from her on-screen accent.
Yes. From what I've read so far on the movie, it is shaping up to be quite the little "hit piece." My favorite quote: Although fictional, it will be fair and accurate. Uh huh.
Last October, Baroness Thatcher declined an appearance held at 10 Downing Street celebrating her 85th birthday . The statement issued included the line, "This lady's not for returning." It reminded me of RR's banter when he was admitted to the hospital.
May God continue to bestow His blessings upon you, Lady Thatcher.
I think that about sums it up. My twelve-year-old recently saw several Streep movies and asked, "Does she ever change? She seems to be the same person in every movie, just with a different voice."
Everyone tells me she is a great actress, and I just don't see it.
I was watching TCM last weekend when one of my favorite movies 'Bridge on the River Kwai' was being introduced.
Alec Guinness turned down the role three times before finally excepting it.
One of the reasons was he thought the plot was 'anti-British'. That was 1956-1957
Can you imagine a British Movie Star, or an American Movie Star (I refuse to call them actors anymore) turning down a part because the plot of the movie offended his/her sense of patriotism?
Which is just the point you were making in one of the comments.
The movie was excellent because it did not sandbag the king and queen. There is no point to doing that to the royal couple.
However, doing a hit job on the Thatcher Legacy is the kind of thing one would expect from Hollywood Miscreants and British leftist scum. I won't see it even if it is on TV!
It only started filming a few days ago.
