Thanks for the reference. It prompted me to do a bit of digging for
the forum, recalling a haunting quote at the beginning of the miserable WWI.
“The lamps are going out all over Europe. We shall not see them lit again in our time”.

IIRC, there is a closing chapter/appendix about a French high schooler
who was unable to join his male classmates at the front due to some medical problem.
Everyone of them was killed. Sounds like a good “survivor’s guilt” case.
And Tuchmann’s “Zimmerman Telegram” when the Germans tried to induce
Mexico to attack the USA. Great book.
