Ronald Reagan was born 100 years ago on Sunday, and that has prompted celebrations and reflections of our 40th president. Among many conservatives he is held up as the ideal president, perhaps better than any other. Among some others he is viewed less favorably, especially when it comes to his fiscal policies. What do you think? Does Ronald Reagan stand as the nation's greatest president?

It's difficult to know how dangerous the world might have become if not for Reagan's leadership during the Cold War. He definitely belongs on this short list.
What do you think?
Was Ronald Reagan the best president in U.S. history?

Yes. Reagan understood and articulated government’s role in our society and America’s place in the world. And he made his vision a reality. (410 responses)

No. Reagan had his strengths but in the end he was a fiscal conservative in word, not actions. Don’t forget that he, too, raised taxes and expanded government. (164 responses)

No. Reagan’s economic policies were ruinous, and by the time he left office he was doddering. This near religious worship of Reagan is undeserved. (583 responses)

I’d still say Washington was.
No, he wasn’t. George Washington was our greatest president by far. Without Washington, there would have been no American presidency.
It’s a stupid question. There is no room for one of the best, or top 3, top 5, or top 10. The question is designed to drive No votes, which is what is intended.
FReeped.
I agree. Washington, with a few others, but Reagan was definitely in there with the best.
Freeped.
The question on its face is kind of crazy. If you have been alive for 230 years and still coherent then I can see a plausible reply. Outside of that Reagan was the best President in my lifetime.
the problem is that the no votes gave reasons that I didn't agree with.
Yes, he's up there but not necessarily the top.
And his economic policies did a lot of good for the country. He was not the one that set us up for being in the mess we're in today.
That would be a no!!! What’s with all this nonsense anyway????

However, I'd never heard of Murry Rothbard's scathing criticism until recently. http://tinyurl.com/dteuj
RR wasn’t ‘the’ greatest. He shares that distinction with Thomas Jefferson.
Can’t vote. Poll seems to be closed. The answers come up at the link, but no buttons. Pretty dang good for Ronnie coming from this leftist rag.

Asking which president is the best is too subjective.
I’d like to see a poll asking which president brought more freedom to the world by freeing those under dictatorship or tyranny.
By that standard you would have to put Reagan and George W. Bush on the very top pedestals.
I wonder how many of the younger generation would even understand that question or realize how many the Democrat Party have enslaved - FDR and the Iron Curtain and the Democrat Congress ending all support to Viet Nam resulting in the genocide there and in Cambodia. Not to mention President Wilson rounding up and mauling American citizens.
Washington sacrificed the most. Lincoln was the most literate. Qualifiers like that make for more interesting polling.
Agreed
Oh. I refreshed the page, and the buttons came up.
It’s 50-50, yes-no now.
No. He was very good, but not the greatest. That would go to George Washington.
No. He’s up there, but he fell for amnesty. He did live to regret it, but the precedent was set and the damage was done.
