Gun advocates say a landmark ruling from the U.S. Supreme Court last year, combined with a new landscape in the Illinois Legislature this year, could usher in a long-debated law to let people carry handguns in public in Illinois the last state in the nation that doesn't allow it.
"If my vote count is right, there is a majority (in the Illinois Legislature) that would support the 'carry' bill" if sponsors can get it past the opposition of legislative leaders in both chambers, said Todd Vandermyde, a National Rifle Association lobbyist in Springfield. "We're clearly there."
Such optimism from the gun lobby isn't unusual at the start of Illinois legislative sessions, which perennially begin with a slew of "concealed carry" bills that ultimately don't pass.
What's different this year is that anti-gun voices aren't being as dismissive of the legislation's chances as in past years.

In Missouri, free citizens carry loaded handguns in their vehicles, no permit required. Why do Illinoisans vote for worthless, corrupt political hacks who deny them their freedom, and tax the crap out of them? I just don't understand it.
No 2nd amendment rights in Illinois. Well THAT explains the near total lack of CRIME in the state!
Take a look at the Red/Blue map of the last couple of Federal elections. Most of this state is populated by normal, right thinking conservative types. However we are quite hopelessly outvoted by Cook County.
And if we aren't outvoted by them the Cook County machine will manufacture all the votes they need.
It's a damn shame, really. Like I said 85% of the State is a great place full of wonderful people. It's the septic system known as Chicago that's the problem. We ought to let Chicago, Milwaukee, and Gary form their own State. Why it'd be a liberal Utopia before you knew it.
Sickening isn’t it?
It’s a damn shame that states can be held captive by the urban leeches that reproduce like fruit flies and produce nothing but dependence. I’ll never understand why people want to live in tiny cages called apartments and be totally dependent on someone bringing them everything they need to survive.
It's called a "warm body democracy" and not a single one has ever survived more than a few generations. We're witnessing the death throes of the greatest Republic in history right now. Hang on because the ride only gets rougher from here on out. And there is no 'off' switch.

Obviously he has never been to Maryland either.
That would equalize the situation.
43 states have some version of “shall issue”.
We need to break the other seven. Any way we can.
The person that really runs the state of Illinois resides in the Mayors office in Chicago. The Governor is just the Mayors water boy. Unfortunately, we are about to be thrown from the frying pan into the fire when Emanuel is anointed.
You forgot Madigan.
This is laughable. We have a rat House, rat Senate and rat Governor. A snow balls chances in hell are better.
The inside scoop is a slim majority of Chicago Aldermen support some form of concealed carry. Daley held them at bay this cycle, but if they’re a reflection of their constituents CCW is coming to IL.
How about something like this...
Amendment to the Constitution:
The Executive, Legislative or Judicial branch shall not regulate in any way an individuals right to keep and bear arms, nor shall any agent thereof deprive, deny or interfere with the Citizens right to keep and bear arms or the manufacture or sale or purchase of arms. Any employee, agent, officer, or judge of the federal government attempting to subvert this amendment shall, immediately upon conviction, be sentenced to death and shall be executed one year after conviction; any and all appeals of that employee must be heard and completed within one year of conviction.
If it were to pass I’m fairly sure that State governments would begin shitting bricks... especially because ANY favorable ruling by a federal judge [against the right to keep and bear arms] would be unlikely, as that Judge would be forfeiting his life.

Even if no permits are actually issued to normal people, Noo Joisey technically has a permit system. So does Maryland. So does Hawaii.
Illinois has nothing.
Wisconsin has no concealed carry. But they do have open carry.
Illinois has nothing.
I’m with you...I refuse to enter Illinois and be less free. Once one experiences the freedom that carrying brings, one cannot go back to being dependent on the government for protection.
One WingedShark, I like the way you think...
But it’ll never happen brother.
They want guys like us either dead, or permanently incapacitated, either by onerous laws or any other way they can think of.
My response: F*’em. Carry anyway.
About time for some non-violent civil disobediance on a really large scale.
“..Noo Joisey technically has a permit system...”
That’s right, they do...and I was told flat-out by the good Detective Sergeant of state troopers that I would never be able to get one.
They supposedly issue out-of-state “permits” (gee...I need PERMISSION to exercise a RIGHT?)but I was on the phone for an hour with this guy.
He said “for the record, I’m on your side, but this is what will happen when you apply for it...”
It’s a bunch of crap, brother Lee...we need multiple, repeated, and continuous lawsuits to break that state into recognizing our rights. WHo has that kind of money?
