This is an old state. Lots of descendants of the German, Poles, Dutch, etc. in the mountains west (I'm one of them.). They work hard, and don't take too well to bureaucratic flatlanders driving up I-68 and lecturing them. There's been an underground secession movement up there for decades, and it's only simmered hotter as the Dims from (infamous) Montgomery, Prince George's, and Baltimore counties have gotten more left-wing, militant, and dictatorial. You don't mess with self-reliant hillbillies who will defend familial and community pride.
