WATCH: Christina Aguilera Screws Up The National Anthem
Business Insider Sports Page ^ | January 6, 2011 | Dashiell Bennett

The biggest moment any singer can ask for: "The Star Spangled Banner" at the Super Bowl. And Christina Aguilera messed up the lyrics. At about 51 seconds in, as she was about to sing the fourth line ("O'er the ramparts we watched, were so gallantly streaming"), she accidentally sang a hybrid of the second line: "What so proudly we watched, at the twilight's last streaming."

The Dixie Chicks singing the national anthem in 2003 is by far the best version I’ve ever heard. No screeching, no mangled lyrics-—just beautiful voices SINGING it the way it should be sung.

If you can put your politics aside and focus on the music I think you’ll agree. At least YAHOO agrees-—they ranked it #1, with Whitney Houston as #2.

christina looked fine

I disagree. She clearly looked like she knew she had screwed up.

I really don't like the yodel modulation craze when singing the national anthem....or most other songs. It seems ok for opera, but it comes across as really fake when overdone. Rule of thumb: don't do the yodel thing more than 3 times in one song.

I prefer noninstrumental throat-singing.

You must know more about her than the rest of us.

Nope. I was just commenting on her appearance.

That’s a copout ~ come on, you’re among friends here. If you know something about her being into prostitution you can let us know ~ we won’t tell eh!

But somewhere between the west coast and the east coast and all points in between there must be a person who can sing it with the dignity it deserves.

Such people abound. They're just not "pop divas".

First Rule of Singing the National Anthem: Remember, it's bigger than me. I don't own it, I don't have the right to "put my stamp on it". I treat it with dignity, and sing it straight.

Second Rule of Singing the National Anthem: I'm not there to perform. I'm there to lead my fellow Americans in singing OUR National Anthem.

Best place to see these rules followed? A minor league baseball game.

This skank cheated on her husband by going to lesbo bars and picking up women there.

That was no copout. I told you what my comment referred to. If you don’t like it, too bad.

She seemed quite overdressed for the role ~ around here they wear much less than that.

I DON'T agree. Whitney Houston's version is still number one. Jordan Sparks' version is either number two or is tied for number one.

Aguilera's version is in last place. Somewhere between there and Whitney's and Jordan's version, the Dixie Chicks come stumbling in.

Don’t get me wrong-—Natalie made a big mistake when she criticized W. with her comments and all three of them have paid an enormous price for exercising their right to free speech. I’m sure they would all take it back if they could considering the negative reaction, loss of millions of dollars, and the ruining of their careers. All three of them have enormous talent, especially the two sisters whose parents made them play instruments as children and performed in public as teens. And even more impressive is the fact that they write some of their own songs. How many artists today can say they play their own instruments and write their own music?

Like I said, IF you can put your politics aside..... Obviously you can’t do that, so it’s your loss.

I guess this is a matter of opinion.

Jordin Sparks? Never heard of her, so I went to YouTube and listened to her version along with Whitney Houston’s again. They both gave top-notched performances——if you like SCREECHING!! I don’t know why these women (Christina, Mariah, Jennifer Hudson, Celine Dion, etc. etc.) do this. Why can’t they just SING? They seem to think that they have to break the champagne glass with their high notes for it to be good. I usually plug my ears.

Plus: Did you notice that the Dixie Chicks SANG their version without music? Their voices were so beautiful they didn’t need music. If you have time give them another listen and notice the crowd’s reaction, too. It’s obvious it was moved by the performance.

I am a NY Yankees fan...I watch almost every game...for 95% of home games they use a truncated version on Kate Smith's rendition to start the 7th inning stretch...I use to watch her show as a small child in the 1950s on TV.
She has a great voice....but I have grown sick and tired of it....
