Here in the totally Democrat-run state of IL, a 66% income tax just hit our paychecks last week. As you can imagine, anyone with any sense has spent the last week discussing to which state we should flee. My friends and I have been fantasizing about a conservative commune where everyone showers, no one would starve (because we hunt) and there is no wife-swapping. It’s a fun exercise to think about. Several of us believe a solution to our partisan problems (before it descends into civil war) might just be to part ways with the American Left and set up traditional American government in the already conservative states. The first goal should be in beefing up these already rational and taxpayer-friendly states with more like-minded citizens. Too many of us are separated and living in enemy territory, forced into an ideological closet from which we dare not exit for fear of public humiliation and shunning.
Living in a solid blue state, it is nearly impossible not to have been accosted at a cocktail party while trying to enjoy some shrimp by a (literally) foaming at the mouth leftist who accidentally found out you voted for Bush. And God forbid it should be discovered you once worked for Rush Limbaugh (like me). In that scenario, not one person would come to your defense if your accuser threw you through a plate glass window. I’m not a bumper sticker person (too hard to scrape off) but I’ve known a few brave souls who’ve had their cars scratched for advertising their conservative beliefs. Probably pretty accurate, but when you look at States like Illinois, if you isolate Chicago, the rest of the State isn’t that liberal. You could probably say the same for California if you isolated LA and SF. Problem is that’s where most of the people live.

Yes, I think the income tax rate went from 3 to 5%.
What about Indiana? It’s pretty darn nice down in the Indy area- not the inner city part, but around Geist Resevoir and Speedway. Lot of conservatives down there.

Yes, it was a 66% State tax INCREASE.
All big cities attract lower income groups because of subsidized housing, jobs, and benefits. Hence, they also have the highest percentage of minorities AND liberals advocating on their behalf.
It will be like science fiction (eg, Asimov’s The Naked Sun) where the rural areas are slaves to the urban areas. Unless the rural areas manage to take control. Of course, in Asimov’s book it was remote planets where the farming occurs.
Echoing the misleading newspaper headline (How they LOVE to inflame things!). Any time people quote percentages instead of actual numbers - beware.
Under the legislation, the personal income tax rate would "temporarily" rise to 5% from 3%. The rate for corporate taxes would rise to 7% from 4.8%.

True. While on active duty I brief stints at Presidio of SF and Monterey. Probably the choicest assignments in the world. Unfortunately, after that period in my career, CA politics went South and continued that way being dragged along by the Environmental Lobby and the Public Service Unions which have crippled the State.
True. Except I live near Springfield, and while it is more conservative in some respects, it’s all about the state agencies, so you can still get some “are you from outer space” looks if you mention Rush, or expound on free markets. We are thinking of moving, but our family is mostly all here. But if we wait too long to sell, the Obamacare real estate tax may become a factor. But if we leave, the state become that much more liberal, leaving people we care about even more likely to be hurt by lib policies.
