A $7,500 electric car discount scares dealers (Cash for Clunkers Part II)
CNN Money ^ | February 4, 2011 | Peter Valdes-Dapena

In an effort to put 1 million electric cars on the road by 2015, the Obama administration has proposed a plan that would put up to $7,500 directly in the hands of car buyers without having them jump through any tax hoops.

Plug-in car advocates love the idea but dealers aren't so sure about it.

A tax credit for plug-in vehicles already exists but, as it stands now, car buyers have to wait until tax time to get any money back.

[Snip]

J.D. Power estimates that only about 20,000 EVs will be sold this year. If the rebate boosts that by 10%, which Omotoso calls a reasonable guess, it still adds up to a relative handful of vehicles.

If the “I luv da planet” crowd would hurry up and start buying this garbage, I believe there is a good chance we might see gas at 25 cents a gallon again. LOL! I’m keeping my SUV. And I promise not to run over any of those extension cords.

The Obama administration is Lucy and the dealers are Charlie Brown. The $7,500 is the football. How frickin’ stupid is Charlie Brown?

Exactly right. Every 1 cent Algore can knock off a barrel of oil, by peddling unsafe lighting and transportation in the US, saves his Chinese masters billions.

Can I just take the $7,500 and then let the car get repo’d?

the cars can't compete in the market because they don't make any sense from an energy, ecological or financial perspective. A dumb enough idea for the gov’t to throw taxpayers money at. Figures

I wouldn't worry. Something tells me that no one is going to buy these crap boxes anyway. They are going to be a Edsel like failure.

I laughed at your pic. I forgot about the Peel Trident. That was a tiny car.

The idea of such a large subsidy bugs the bejeebers out of me. Couple questions for anyone in the know:

1) What’s the business case for $7,500 of my tax dollars going towards my neighbor getting an electric car. What is exactly is the ROI / Payback period - or is this just to make libs feel all warm and fuzzy?

2) Since electricity rates vary across the country, where would this car make financial sense? Is it a very limited area? Do the weather conditions (such as snow) or terrain (mountains) mate to the cost/Kwh sweet spot (assuming one exists).

3) Can I get a all weather speakers installed so that I can play a recording of a 67 GTO with Tri-Power.

When I read your post, I believed you to be making a joke or being sarcastic. But I believe that what you are suggesting can be done. If a person already has a lousy credit rating and they can talk a dealer into financing them, then, yes, I think they could do as you suggest.

From your lips to God’s ears. We could have 93 octane available everywhere and 600hp muscle cars.

Wait until all those batteries in them battery operated cars get cold & don’t start up. What’s next: retrofitting heaters for garages or warming blankets for the car batteries?
