Immigration Catch-22 unfolding in N.D. slayings

If he had been from almost any other country, the former convict from the Twin Cities called a "person of interest" in the fatal shooting of four people in Minot, N.D., probably would have been deported before the killings occurred.

But the 26-year-old man is a native of Somalia. Because Somalia has no government, U.S. officials cannot deport people there. But officials also could not hold him after his release from federal custody in May 2010, following an assault conviction. Generally, officials are prohibited from detaining criminal aliens longer than six months after their release from custody.

So the man, who once lived in the Twin Cities and who recently had been splitting time between Minot and the oil fields of Williston, N.D., was on supervised release when the mother of his child and three others were killed last week......

They couldn't just throw his ass out of airplane over Somalia or something?

With a parachute of course.

I missed how he got to the US. Did he just ‘materialize’ here out of thin air?

In any case, give him a Koran and send him to Gitmo. There are options, after all.

Yeah, just somehow get him physically back to Somalia. Even air drop him back to his family, if that can be reasonably located.

The problem has been resolved. He is no longer in limbo ... he is back into the system, and can be held. Unfortunately, it took four lives for it to happen.

I meant prior to the lives being lost. Once they had him ready to deport, and nowhere to go - that’s when Gitmo is most useful.

I understand. I was writing sarcastically. I made up my mind quite a while ago, though, to let my writing, not “/sarcasm” tags, tell the story. Sometimes I do better than others. ;-)

“Because Somalia has no government, U.S. officials cannot deport people there.”

What kind of crazy reasoning is THAT?

We should be deporting EVERY illegal alien from ANYwhere to Somalia: Take over their airport with some special ops guys every once in a while and fly as many illegals in as we can. Repeat as needed. Word gets around, we got no more illegal alien problem.

Background of the victims (from the source):

‘Police found 19-year-old Sabrina Zephier, the mother of the man’s 5-month-old daughter, dead Friday. Their baby was found alive in the apartment.

Killed an hour later were Zephier’s mother, Jolene Zephier, 38; Sabrina Zephier’s brother, Dillon Zephier, 13, and Jolene Zephier’s boyfriend, Jeremy Longie, 22. Police found their bodies in Jolene Zephier’s mobile home.’

I guess old ND is growing up. Back in the 90s, the state had 3 to 5 murders a year. Now murder is coming to be dime a dozen. Other violent crime abounds. Just yesterday, a South American, being tried for gross sexual impositon on a minor (his neice) pulled a gun in the court room and tried to shoot the prosecutor. A district attorney and the sheriff jumped him and saved the day. No word on this guy’s immigration status but he does not speak English or any of the North Dakota dialects.
