INDIANAPOLIS State Sen. Mike Delph has received an e-mail saying the man suspected of shooting U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords should have instead targeted someone like him, and the Indiana Senate has asked state police to investigate.
The e-mail obtained by The Associated Press rails against a contentious immigration bill the Carmel Republican is pushing and refers to him and the country in derogatory terms. It is addressed to "Senator Racist Delph" and mentions Delph's wife and five daughters by name, saying that a man with a family "should know better than to break families!!"
The last line of the e-mail states: "I better hear back from you because I want answers to my questions!!"
Delph declined to comment on the e-mail and continued business as normal on the Senate floor Thursday.
State police didn't immediately return messages seeking comment.
Senate Chief of Staff Jeff Papa says the Senate gave police the e-mail after an aide saw it Thursday. He said senators sometimes get strongly worded e-mails and that erring on the side of caution is preferable.
"It's better to check it out," he said.
Delph's Arizona-style immigration proposal would require police to ask for proof of citizenship or immigration status if they have a reasonable suspicion that a person is in the country illegally. The bill would also require that official state documents are issued only in English in most cases. And it includes a provision that Delph has pushed before punishment for employers who knowingly hire illegal immigrants. Companies could lose their business license after a third offense.
The e-mail, which contained grammatical and spelling errors, said that the proposal would lead to racial profiling.
"If you are not white and have blonde hair and blue eyes you will be asked for your proof of legal residency!" the e-mail states. "Your target is the hispanic community and it is very clear, they are going to be in the radar of all the Police officers in Indiana."
Delph's immigration proposal will be heard in a Senate committee on Feb. 9. He has faced plenty of complaints over his previous attempts to address immigration, and told The Associated Press for a story last week that immigration proposals can stir up harsh allegations.
"By taking on the issue, you invite criticism of a racial bias and an ethnic bias and all these different things. From a political perspective, you don't want to have to deal with that," he said last week. "It puts you in a bad light."
Delph said it takes "chutzpah" to press such issues, but said he believes it's the right thing to do.
I have no problem with deporting an entire family of illegal aliens.
I hope he is exercising his 2nd amendment rights.
The insanity starts the moment people forget that anyone sneaking into the country illegally is NEVER going to make a good citizen.
Once that basic truth is forgotten, it is all down hill from there.
I think the AP is going to report that this is from a TeaPartier.
Or may Tea Bagger.
No, if they thought they could pin the threat on a conservative, they would have named him, and given his home address.
Did Janet Napolitano, Harry Reid, or Christine Matthews send it?
Exactly. In no way do we prevent family members from going along.
Hang in there buddy, if they keep coming in it will be more than threats for a lot of families..
I have no idea what this is about, but if you need to protect some important person you sure as hell don’t want the idiot, leftist secret service.
In the past 50 years the idiot secret service has killed one president and nearly killed two other presidents.
The current secret service we have is close to the Three Stooges or the Mickey Mouse Club.
I wouldn’t trust these jokers to protect a doughnut from chocolate sprinkles.
Civility
Well we do know one thingthis person with a big familia is not a Mormon.
Around here, when an illegal is supposed to be deported, we get all of the sob stories about, "what's going to happen to that person's child/children."
Silly me, I thought that if a mother and/or father went from one country to another, one took one's children.
These sob sister reporters write as though the U.S. government plans to prevent the illegals from taking their children with them when they are returned to Mex., El Salvador, Honduras, Guatemala, etc.
What lunacy, do they actually believe when we insist that illegal aliens be forcibly returned to their own countries, we desire to keep their children?
Thanks DeaconBenjamin.
