Tacky. Somehow Ronald Reagan survived without trademarking his name.

It’s a new age, even if only for the last 20 years.

"Tacky. Somehow Ronald Reagan survived without trademarking his name."

Not tacky at all. It is a totally different ballgame being played now. We either fight to retain and bring back our country to it's original intent with everything we've got, or let it all go to hell.

“Tacky. Somehow Ronald Reagan survived without trademarking his name.”

True. But that was a different time and different culture. Our landscape has been so coarsened that this is really a move of self-protection as much as assurance of future business flexibility.

Different media today - including the internet.

I give her lots of credit for being preemptive.

Yes it is tacky. The country is in serious trouble. This stuff is not helpful if a person wants to be taken seriously.

Reagan was serious. This is not.

It's Obama’s fault.

In the internet age with cybersquatters this is standard practice to free up domain names that people have stashed away in the hopes of extorting famous people or cashing in on a name.

for instance Palin2012 may well be taken by a cybersquatter with a trademark Gov Palin can quickly assume the domain on hundreds like it.

this protects her form extortion, enables her to quickly ramp up a massive online campaign, and protects her from sites using her name to redirect voters to say Obama2012 websites.

Reagan did not have to worry about any of that. In fact no candidates did. Obama/McCain where the first ones where the problems began to be shown. Sen Obama forcefully took over a fansite on either myspace or facebook and it caused negative press when he did so.

Politics in the Internet age is very different than pre Internet. A trademark is a needed thing.

But I bet haters never even thought of that angle.
