Could Friday night be one of those defining moments in the career — and potential presidential candidacy — of Sarah Palin?
Egypt is on the brink of a revolution that could transform American and global foreign policy for years — a crisis that is testing President Obama and makes clear the life-and-death stakes for anyone who might think about replacing him.
And as it happens, Ms. Palin, the former governor of Alaska, is scheduled to give a major speech Friday night at the Reagan Ranch Center in Santa Barbara, Calif., in honor of what would have been the 40th president’s 100th birthday.
It’s possible that Ms. Palin could use the opportunity to deliver a broadly conceived foreign policy speech that uses the turmoil in Egypt to advance an understanding of her national security beliefs that goes beyond her use of Twitter messages and Facebook posts.
Mr. Reagan, after all, was a onetime governor (and actor) who had little foreign policy experience when he ran for president. And yet his presidency was in some ways defined by the manner in which he confronted the changing world around him.
The history books recall Mr. Reagan’s confrontations with the Soviet Union, his push to build a missile defense system, his clandestine support of the Contras in Nicaragua, bombings in Libya and the brief war in Grenada.
Ms. Palin has likewise been criticized for a lack of sophistication when it comes to foreign policy. During the 2008 campaign, critics mocked an answer she gave about Russia so much that a phrase from a Saturday Night Live skit — “I can see Russia from my house” — took on an apocryphal resonance.

YEP!
I am so excited about the speech.
Can’t say that my 2 doggies will be interested, but they’ll be with me. Hubby will be at work.
See ya later!
Listening on line is just as difficult as watching online?
Prolly so they can turn it inside out, twist it into taffey, pick it apart and then decry it piece by piece, no matter what she really said, lol. I actually love it when they do that...because every single time they do, more and more and more people realise what they're up to. All they accomplish by doing that is expose themselves and awaken the sheep to realise what wolves they are. The more they do it, and the nastier they are do it, before 2012 only helps her/us/Conservatism/America in the long run.

That’s my prayer for her and our Republic. Pass his torch to her and let the voters of this nation come to that very realization.
Four hours before she speaks but the LIVE thread is going up earlier.
Be sure to get a front row seat...LOL.
Scratch that!
6 hours before she speaks.
Why is a New York Times columist speculating what an Alaskan housewife might say about the Egyptian situation?
Well, all right!
Will Sarah’s speech be on C-SPAN?
ENERGY. Both energy abundance and energy independence.
She could confront head on the 0marxo by pushing for production and development on all fronts including fossil, coal petroleum, and nuclear... That is what wealth creation needs! Energy! We have manpower, we have materials, we have machines -we need cheap energy NOW -not in 30 years from Chinese solar panels and German wind turbines!
OBAMA, TEAR DOWN THAT ENERGY WALL!
They thought they finished her off after Tucson. This speech is a nightmare for the left. I’m looking forward to reading this article.
Grizzly Rising 2012.
yeah... have a woman speak about a muslim uprising situation...
Your blind faith amusing being that you obviously have not noticed hard blackened her eyes have become. She is a great gal. She really is. but there is way TOO much bad PR spewed out my the media in the past that she really is unelectable. any doof on the street has a bad idea of her, and unfortunately there are too many more of these doofs than there are tea party savvy people.
the Doofs did not like Obama care, that is why we got a majority back. they don’t like sarah palin because of the media.
Being a cheer leader for a loser is a waste of time. people allowed the presidency to be a test tube for PCdom once, they wont do it again... Christ, look how much talk there is about third partying again if she gets the nod from our own party...
At least give it some more thought...
I think this could be her finale, her crowning achievement for her principle and patriotism themes of the past two years, neatly packaged as a gift to the Renauldo Magnus and his legacy. She has by now cemented a lot of trust in her charactor and her intentions, and in phase two can move on to the hand to hand combat on the issues.
Palin needs to spend the next two years proving, in the same way, her bona fidis on ballot issues;foreign policy, tax policy, international law, the UN, etc., and she eventually must spell out her own prescriptions for addressing these issues. I don’t think she will run in ‘12, but may in ‘16, just like Hillary decided against running against Bush’s second term.
Themes, generalities and stirring platitudes have a shelf life, as voters have learned with Obama, and IF she decides to run in 2016, she needs to have the same two years polishing her issues platform as she did her personality and principles platform. That foundation has already been laid. More of the same will not boost her any higher than she already is in that department.
We’re ready for policy finess from her and soon. I have said she needs to get on or off, in order to release the other contenders to build a battle campaign for ‘12. I am gettable but you gotta show me the fine print.
I want to make this perfectly clear. She is my choice for President. No reservations. I understand all the comments about how no matter what she says they will attack her. Tough titty. I DON’T CARE ABOUT THE MEDIA!!! I want to hear her vision and understanding of what needs to be done or not done about the Middle East. If not now, when? After the fact Egypt is lost? Or after the fact some compromise is reached? That is NOT leadership. It is TIME for her to leave the “You Betchas” behind. I loved her response to the “target” B.S.! I want someone who is ready to be a President of the United States of America, not a TV personality. It is time to .... or get off the pot!
I thought the monolithic vitrol of the comments to the article was reinforcment to my perception of the readership as isolated knee-jerk leftist.
Comments were petty, not responsive to the article or commentary, and certainly wouldn’t make a good series of comments on any sort of internet forum outside the NYT.
