A bald eagle was killed by a train Thursday morning while enjoying breakfast on a stretch of tracks near Abderdeen, according to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

Craig Koppie, an eagle coordinator with the federal agency, said the rare encounter happened in a flash. The bird was eating a deer carcass about 8:30 a.m. as an Amtrak train headed to Washington approached. An engineer spotted the bird and blasted his horn, but the eagle took off too slowly and was hit.

Abderdeen sounds Arabic to you? No wonder you take offense to so many things so easily. Aberdeen is Gaelic.

Federal Laws that Protect Bald Eagles

Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act

The bald eagle will continue to be protected by the Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act even though it has been delisted under the Endangered Species Act. This law, originally passed in 1940, provides for the protection of the bald eagle and the golden eagle (as amended in 1962) by prohibiting the take, possession, sale, purchase, barter, offer to sell, purchase or barter, transport, export or import, of any bald or golden eagle, alive or dead, including any part, nest, or egg, unless allowed by permit Bald Eagle sitting in tree (16 U.S.C. 668(a); 50 CFR 22). "Take" includes pursue, shoot, shoot at, poison, wound, kill, capture, trap, collect, molest or disturb (16 U.S.C. 668c; 50 CFR 22.3). The 1972 amendments increased civil penalties for violating provisions of the Act to a maximum fine of $5,000 or one year imprisonment with $10,000 or not more than two years in prison for a second conviction. Felony convictions carry a maximum fine of $250,000 or two years of imprisonment. The fine doubles for an organization. Rewards are provided for information leading to arrest and conviction for violation of the Act.

Huh? Abderdeen just sounds like the reporter messed up when trying to spell Aberdeen (as in Aberdeen Scotland). But whatever.

If the train had been the Texas Eagle, I would have thought it was a fight for dominance. When is mating season? Understand male locomotives get unusually aggressive during mating season.

Bald eagles may be majestic to look at, but no one ever said they were smart.

The eagle was not getting a nutritious lunch nor was he enrolled in Michelle Obama’s “Let’s Move” program.

Poor downtrodden, obsese eagle.

I'm told that bullet trains have to stop just before the station so they can clean the dead birds off of the front so it doesn't alarm those waiting on the platforms.

The bird shouldn’t of tried to fly while carrying the carrion. Like the one in AK that electrocuted itself in the power lines flying with a deer head. They obviously enjoy venison:)

Eagles are still getting run over by powerful forces trying to get their destination.

I thought this would end now that we’ve gotten rid of Sean McDermott...

I took care of an old WW2 vet yesterday. We got to talking about time spent in Alaska. He told me about his commercial fishing days in the early 1950’s in the Territory of Alaska.

“If the fishing was slow we would shoot bald eagles because we could get $2.00 per claw. If there weren’t any eagles around we’d shoot one of them pesky sea lions and drag him into shore until he started to rot. Then we’d have an eagle shootin’ gallery!”

To which I replied: “Well, they taste just like chicken.”

“They do?”

As he left the office he patted me on the arm and stated: “You and me got to get together and go eagle huntin’ some day.”

I just LOVE WW2 vets! Too bad there’s so few of them left.

Once saw a bald eagle munching on a raccoon, meet the front end of a semi out on CO-119.

looked like a pillow fight.

Sad, the nest was in a cottonwood next to the highway, mom and baby were waiting patiently for lunch.

The solution? End the Amtrak subsidy. The lives of bald eagles depends on it.

The looks on peoples faces as they passed the front of this train were absolutely priceless. There was blood and cowhide everywhere.

Railroad retiree here. The saddest thing about the view from the locomotive is when a dog, usually a hunting type; hound, bird dog, or some family pet, is caught in the middle of the track.

They take off running away from the train but many just never take that exit off track and it’s a sad ending. Everyone would cheer when the lucky ones crossed the rail to safety.

Possums are so slow it’s over before they even realize it. Deer are overly cautious but some meet their fate via the locomotive.

“And who will sew their little masks for them?”

“Miss Litella, it’s “Croatians”, not “crustaceans”.

“Ohhh...that’s different. Nevermind...”

Classic SNL. And yes, I’m dating myself.
