Executive Editor Bill Keller and Washington bureau chief Dean Baquet were interviewed at the National Press Club Monday night by Marvin Kalb for New York Times Behind the Scenes, which aired on C-Span.
As reported Monday night by Keach Hagey of Politico, when Kalb asked what Keller thought of media mogul Rupert Murdoch, who has launched a New York edition of the Wall Street Journal, Keller impishly replied Who? before saying he thought Murdochs greatest impact in the United States comes through Fox News.
After hesitantly giving Murdoch credit for investing in journalism, albeit tabloid-style journalism, Keller criticized Murdochs most lasting effect in this country, Fox News, even bringing up the attempted murder of Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords:
I think the effect of Fox News on American public life has been to create a level of cynicism about the news in general.
I think it has contributed to the sense that theyre all just, you know, out there with a political agenda, Fox is just more overt about it. And I think thats unhealthy.
I think Fox has also raised, we have had a lot of talk since the Gabby Giffords murder, attempted murder, about civility in our national discourse, and I, you know, make no connection between the guy who shot those people in Tucson and the national discourse. But it is true that the national discourse is more polarized and strident than it has been in the past, and to some extent, I would lay that at the feet of Rupert Murdoch, yes.

NYTimes Co. reports 26 percent drop in 4Q profit (WSJ, AP)
The New York Times Co. is reporting a 26 percent drop in fourth-quarter earnings as revenue from its printed newspapers continues to shrink.
ya! ya’ll are getting in the way of the socialist takeover, using facts, logic, and common sense!
UNFAIR! UNFAIR!
I’m suprised that liberals aren’t jumping out of high-rise windows.
Conservatives are finally being heard.
And that from the New York Times.
So if Liberals get control of Healthcare it will include mental health. Any non-liberal thought will be deemed unhealthy and banned for the greater good.
NY Times Co. reports 26% drop in profits
Question for Carlos Slim: How's that investment working out for ya?
FOX News is certainly “having an impact” on the New York Times. Ha ha ha!
Sorry, pal....you need NO help in that regard. You're doing fine all by yourself.
I’ll tell ya what’s unhealthy. The left and their agenda by any means, to shut everyone else up.
Exactly.
Banned? No, committed to an institution. Straight out of the leftist playbook, written a century ago.
People generally watch the channels they like. That is the proof in the pudding, as it were, as to why FNC gets such huge numbers.
As for the national discourse getting nastier, I believe that began in the early 1980s, when Republicans, after years in the wilderness, began achieving a serious foothold in the Congress. Democrats didn’t like that, since they ruled the Congressional roost for decades and decades.
Now the differences get even greater because we had a Democratically controlled White House and Congress force feed expensive and wasteful programs down our throats.
See, the New York Times has UTTERLY no bias, and they are SO SUBTLE about it. Oh, yes. And Keller has ALL THE ROOM IN THE WORLD, to talk about bias. After all, his hands are clean.
If I ran a newspaper that competed with the NYT, I would highlight every error of fact and every blatant example of bias. It would destroy their illusion of credibility and greatly reduce their national influence. The only reason I can think of as to why other papers don’t do this is because they are all pushing toward the same goal.
Chris Matthews: Glenn Beck Is Today's Number One 'Exporter Of Fear'
Chrissy Matthews is an exporter of hate.
I think these lying Democrat journolist scumbags need to get their stories straight - - who shot Giffords, Palin or Murdoch?
