COLUMBIA, Mo. -- A monster winter storm took aim at a third of the nation Monday, threatening to lay a potentially deadly path of heavy snow and ice from the Rockies to New England, followed by a wave of bitter, bone-rattling cold that could affect tens of millions of people.
Cities including St. Louis, Kansas City and Milwaukee could be hardest hit, with expected midweek snowfalls of up to 2 feet and drifts piled 5 to 10 feet. Even hardy Chicago could be in for its third-worst blizzard since record-keeping began.
"I wouldn't want to be on the road in open areas tomorrow night," said forecaster Tom Skilling of Chicago television station WGN. "I don't think I'd want to be driving in the city either. The fact is people die in these things. They skid off the road and go wandering around in whiteout conditions."
Warmer areas were not safe, either. The system could spawn tornadoes in parts of the South.

Thanks - glad you liked it.
Glad you’re OK - thanks for the update...
They were forecasting snow in Wasilla yesterday, 3-5 inches, I am 11 miles north of Wasilla and have not seen hardly a dusting. So far this year I have yet to do any shoveling or even having to use my snow blower, but then again its the first week of February, I would predict we may start seeing more precipt soon.
As far as winter weather in Alaska goes in the last 5 years it has been much milder, but I hate the wet summer, we used to have awesome nice dry summers.
It’s 33 outside right now.
We got some inches of snow, which I haven’t been outside to measure yet, and a glaze of icing. Everything is shut down now.
We’re in a break of weather for now. Matter of fact, the sun is peaking through the clouds.
But what’s coming looks like liquid on the radar, and with everything so cold, if it is, it’ll freeze on contact. We’re going to have another break after that and then get whomped with another batch of the storm in the form of snow.
Oh WOW!!!
I’ve seen a LOT of cars off the road in my day, but never anything like that.
Hey, it was -5 last night when I plunked some steaks on the grill.
it is strange to think the weather in Oklahoma is worse this year than in Wasilla!
When it’s below zero, I get out the cast iron fry pan.
Sun is out, now (11:15). Homer Glen, IL officially marked 21 inches of Global Warming on the ground from the storm.
I have a 4.5 foot drift in the backyard.
The real bummer is that, coming home from my EMA gig at 04:00, I had to “ditch” my car in the parking lot of a strip mall so as not to get a ticket from the village for leaving my car on my street.
Got back to it this morning and the snow-service company beat me to it. They piled up as much snow around it as they could...that’ll teach me! (joiks.)
Many lost power in this area (greater Cincinnati), last evening ;I am one of several thousands still without.Wood and kerosene plus batteries serve for now.May run generator if outage longer, generator not tied into utility so extension cords will get used!
From what I heard we received 20”. It took us from 9 am until 2 pm to get shoveled out (though that included helping a couple neighbors). We were finished at home around 1 pm. I’m pooped and so is my wife. I’m going to have a little Maker’s Mark tonight to celebrate still breathing...
Took my wife and I from 9 am until 2 pm to get the snow removed (helped a couple neighbors in that time, so drop an hour off). Unbelievable. I’m going to celebrate life with a Maker’s Mark later today.
Looks like the Daytona 500. On ice.
It was 40 and sunny for a few hours.
Mr. mm got the global warming blower running and cleared the driveway. The temperatures have now dropped back to 30 and it’s blowing and snowing like crazy. I heard some ice pellets hitting the windows for a bit.
And they are indeed forecasting lake effect snow for tonight through Thurs morning (as expected) and then another nor’easter for Saturday.
My wife heard there’s another storm down in OK that may be headed our way, but not as bad. I said “What’s not as bad...18” in stead of 20?”
I was using the snowblower earlier today and could not find any direction to point the thing that didn’t result in my getting covered by blow-back. It seemed like the wind was blowing in more than one direction at the same time. Sometimes from the south, sometimes from the east, even a little from the west (the direction it normally comes out of, as I’m sure you know).
I’ve never had this happen before. I don’t really understand how it can happen.
