Monster Winter Storm Takes Aim at One-Third of U.S. (Live Thread)

COLUMBIA, Mo. -- A monster winter storm took aim at a third of the nation Monday, threatening to lay a potentially deadly path of heavy snow and ice from the Rockies to New England, followed by a wave of bitter, bone-rattling cold that could affect tens of millions of people.

Cities including St. Louis, Kansas City and Milwaukee could be hardest hit, with expected midweek snowfalls of up to 2 feet and drifts piled 5 to 10 feet. Even hardy Chicago could be in for its third-worst blizzard since record-keeping began.

"I wouldn't want to be on the road in open areas tomorrow night," said forecaster Tom Skilling of Chicago television station WGN. "I don't think I'd want to be driving in the city either. The fact is people die in these things. They skid off the road and go wandering around in whiteout conditions."

Warmer areas were not safe, either. The system could spawn tornadoes in parts of the South.

Our ice/sleet/snow event has changed to a heavy snow event. I’d rather get 12-20 inches of snow than the ice - ice does some bad things....

Blizzard warning for the first time in St. Louis since I can remember....

Fun times!!!

All right, you wusses: who has to work outside this afternoon/evening? (I'm in NW suburban Chicago).

Let's have a show of hands.

:)

Morning, AGP.

Here in Pgh, the local media had the approaching storm hyped up to be Ice-Mageddon. Yesterday at work, people were worried about not making it in, and were passing around the company emergency number in case we were shut down.

What an anti-climax. This morning’s commute was completely uneventful, and I got in at the regular time.

There were some accidents in other areas this morning, however.

Thanks so much.

I’m thinking that this storm is going to rival the March Blizzard of 1993 in its impact on the nation.

Hello,

Watching the ice here in Fenton, work closed, hoping to keep power. Our generator is ready to go if we do, though.

The weather guy is saying to expect 2 inches an hour later today....wow...

Here’s a link to the national Intellicast Radar image.

http://www.intellicast.com/National/Radar/Current.aspx?location=default&region=BGM

I don’t know how to take screen shots of something like this.

I know that if I provide a link that it will always come up as the current radar image and not provide a historical record of the storm as it hits.

Do you know how to do that, or someone else maybe?

In the Philly burbs, a bit of sleet and then a bit of freezing rain. No problem if salt has been put down but rather slick if it hasn’t.

Looks far better than our forecast. 61 today, 25 tonight and going downhill from there.

They even have a smidgen of snow in the cards. I’ll believe that when I see it. LOL

This was just the appetizer.

The main course is being served up this evening and tomorrow.

We’ve got that much already, too. It’s very fine, but pretty cold so it shovels easily. It’s almost like shoveling glass granules instead of that heavy wet stuff that sticks to the shovel.

I need to go out and clear all that global warming out of the drive before the rest of it hits tonight. That’s the stuff that’s going to do us in.

I am located in Chicago ‘burbs as well, and back in the mid 80’s, I managed to get a week long pass from the Army. Came back home, and a snow storm hit us. We got about 6 inches of snow, everything was fine, until the snow hit Georgia... I was told to return ASAP because of the massive snow storm that hit Fort Benning... So, my grandfather drove me down back to the base. We endured several inches of snow on the highway all through Illinois. When I awoke in GA, the roads were mostly closed, the National Guard was out helping motorists, it was so bad. They had..... about two inches of snow.... lol.

Cars were in ditches, abandoned, etc. Grandpa went to the trunk, got the tire chains and dropped me off at base, then returned home. The entire state was basically a disaster. The only vehicles moving around were trucks. The big rigs were just rolling through, but back then, there were no snowbirds so to speak, folks from GA had lived there for generations and snow was something from Mars I guess.

I also remember reading back then, that that snowstorm that hit the south was proof of the coming ice age..... We were pretty much all doomed by the year 2010.

No matter how things change... they always stay the same.

Is there some way of taking a screen shot of that and posting it? (And maybe shrinking it a little?)

My use of the computer does not usually involve doing that sort of thing, so I am not sure how to.

I would like to see that posted so we can compare later to what REALLY happened.

MM, your keyboard has a “print screen” button. When you hit it, a copy of what is on your screen goes into your copy/paste buffer. Open Paint, hit “Paste”, then you should have the screenshot. Then you can save and resize the image.

To post you need to upload to a free photo hosting site and then link from there.
