I have never used V/R in closing any emails. I don’t use emoticons nor shorthand like “LOL,” except with VERY close friends who I would josh with in RL and even then I use them sparingly.

How people can’t discern the difference amazes me.

I tend to avoid shorthand or emoticons, since most of my e-mails are business. I have caught myself onetime closing with “Mit freundlichen Grussen”. After years of working with German outfits, the Deutsch comes back every now and then.
