Jimmy Carter will go down in American history as "the president who lost Iran," which during his term went from being a major strategic ally of the United States to being the revolutionary Islamic Republic. Barack Obama will be remembered as the president who "lost" Turkey, Lebanon and Egypt, and during whose tenure America's alliances in the Middle East crumbled.
The superficial circumstances are similar. In both cases, a United States in financial crisis and after failed wars loses global influence under a leftist president whose good intentions are interpreted abroad as expressions of weakness. The results are reflected in the fall of regimes that were dependent on their relationship with Washington for survival, or in a change in their orientation, as with Ankara.
America's general weakness clearly affects its friends. But unlike Carter, who preached human rights even when it hurt allies, Obama sat on the fence and exercised caution. He neither embraced despised leaders nor evangelized for political freedom, for fear of undermining stability.
Obama began his presidency with trips to Turkey, Egypt and Saudi Arabia, and in speeches in Ankara and Cairo tried to forge new ties between the United States and the Muslim world. His message to Muslims was "I am one of you," and he backed it by quoting from the Koran. President Hosni Mubarak did not join him on the stage at Cairo University, and Obama did not mention his host. But he did not imitate his hated predecessor, President George W. Bush, with blunt calls for democracy and freedom.
Obama apparently believed the main problem of the Middle East was the Israeli occupation, and focused his policy on demanding the suspension of construction in the settlements....

Only thing is the NWO is impossible without WWIII.Peaceful kumbaya hand holding across the world ain’t gonna ever happen. Barry is an idiot if he thinks China and Russia will stand down and dismantle as he has done with us via START.
Sadly I think Obama knows exactly what he is doing as he is taking over with nothing left to gain control of but the electric companies and lemon aide stands.
We need America back FAST! Obama is so protected by his media he will never be properly impeached.I hear this urgency from Bachmann,Palin,West et al. We need a solid leader we can all stand behind without schism.
This will be worse than Iran. The reasons will show themselves soon.
The implications will be very bad. The community organizer made some very bad decisions in a very unstable part of the world.
Obama is a classic utopian marxist and a meddling fool.
In reality yes but Obama’s state run media will report he went up 2 points in the polls for together they thrive in communism garbage.
I was watching Fox News this morning and this conservative guy was saying this is good for Egypt and hopes other countries follow suit. The reason is because it will turn the countries into a democracy. Is this wrong?
Why should we have anything to do with Egypt except for simply visiting the pyramids. I am sick and tired of worrying about countries that have nothing to do with us. The only thing Obama should do is STOP IMMEDIATELY the 1.4 billion we give to Egypt. Let them fight their own battles. The only reason that Carter was concerned about Iran is because we had Americans involved. Other wise he should have kept out of their business too. We are not the World police as much as you want us to be.
Really? And how many Americans have been taken hostage? That is the only reason that Iran was even noticed in the 70’s. Sheesh this is not Carter’s Iran. In fact, when it is said and done, Egypt will have a democratic country. This will be a success so better stop hoping that Obama gets the credit or we could be sorry when he stands up and takes credit for Egypt’s success.
WTF....we going to loose access to the Suez Canal this time.
Not in this country.
To think that the only ramifications of Carter’s Iran bungling was the hostages being held for 444 days is misreading history.
What else was there? I don’t know. I was extremely young during that time. Perhaps you were an adult during that time. Iran is like North Korea. They are like knats they just buzz around wanting attention.
And if the majority want sharia law, then there’s your answer to democracy.
He already has and Nov was proof.
Although many people probably give him too much credit since worldwide terrorism existed before 1979, the establishment of The Islamic Republic of Iran was a big step towards the terror-filled 80’s, 90’s and 00’s and now 10’s. We’ll see how the “change” in Egypt plays out.
If they are dumb enough to vote in sharia law that is their stupidity. Aren’t we putting up with a little craziness because our democracy picked President Obama?
Are you equating America’s making a poor electoral choice with a potential/likely revolution to implement sharia law?
We had a revolution back in our past and we turned out pretty good. You guys are just getting excited over a little country that is sticking up for their rights. There is nothing that says this country will go sharia law. That is you claiming it. The kids that are revoting are wanting FREEDOM! I am proud of them in fact. I hope they get a democratic government and happy for the rest of their lives. You are getting to emotionally involved in this story. I think it could be the 24-7 telecast so I don’t blame you.
"Take Egypt off of the Travel Warning List
but make certain Ayers, Dorhn, and our CODEPINK insurgents are OK..
Make certain that enough stinking cracker Americans
are trapped by our Moslem brothers(terrorists)".
Overlooking your misplaced condescension to a fellow Freeper, I offer just this one poll of many that has confirmed the political aspirations of Egyptians:

The "kids" will be long forgotten at best, in jail or dead at worst.
No kidding?
When it tries to portray Erdogan as some sort of a "Moderate" who in fact has been responsible for the renewed "Islamization" of Turkey, their Leftist, bias is apparent who anyone who has followed Turkey's move toward an full-fledged Islamic Republic.
Perhaps they will emulate Turkey's prime minister, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who navigates among the blocs and superpowers without giving up his country's membership in NATO and its defense ties with the United States. Erdogan obtained a good deal for Turkey, which benefits from political stability and economic growth without being in anyone's pocket.
Turkey used to be our (and Israel's) staunch ally. No more. And to give them membership in NATO is a big mistake.
The ONLY outcome is Mubarak steps down will be a move towards another Islamic Republic in the ME and if so, Jordan and Saudi Arabia will not be far behind.
Then, I fear, another full-fledged war in the ME between a united Islamo-Fascists and Israel is inevitable; only this time, we could see the use of Nukes as Israel may have no choice, or Iran may be emboldened and decide to use them first, once they obtain them...which sadly is a foregone conclusion, seeing as the US will not lift a finger to prevent this from happening and I hold out little hope that Israel will be successful in mounting a 1st strike to try and destroy Iran's nuclear apparatus without our full support.
