My wife and I are getting used to hearing that were doing it wrong. It's not coming from one side of the aisle or another. It's a barrage that boxes the compass. We're becoming immune to it.
Most everyone is willing to point out how strange they think we've become, in detail, without compunction -- or manners. We're wrong, wrong, wrong. If you drift with the current, no one makes you explain anything. Your behavior might seem deranged to me, but I'm not allowed to point it out to you. Our own relatives call us "The Amish" because we don't have cable TV. If you drug your child into catatonia because he acts vaguely male in public school, you're a good parent. Teach your children at home like we do? Weirdo.
So who decides who's fly, and who's wack? Eisenhower's Military-Industrial Complex doesn't have anything on today's Media-Government-Public School Complex. The US is looking more and more monolithic to my eye every day, but it's a very squishy, diffuse-looking monolith. A blob, not a stele.
Hmm. Not a blob. The Blob. Its getting harder to get around or ignore all the time. My family is now most decidedly outside The Blob, but we know all about what goes on inside, because The Blob never leaves you alone.

Maine? No thanks.
Is this a michelle obama thread?
Cause if it is, I ain't a gonna look.
Ooh, two sons. I’m so impressed.
But I agree with the author that it’s a crime that we have to have idiot TV on in every public venue. On the other hand, I figure saying my prayers in the doctor’s waiting room with “The View” on gives me double penance.
Maine? Eek. Drive South, honey.
bookmark for later.
Maine’s got a Tea Party Conservative Republican Governor and the Republicans control the House and the Senate now. The Republicans are doing good stuff. There’s a lot of terrible law here, and the Republicans are getting rid of it.
Our medical center has TV IN THE EXAMINATION ROOMS!........
I dared. Nice article. Nice family portrait on the moose.
I was referring to the climate.
We dumped DirecTV in December after 14 years. My husband was getting sick of "200+ channels and nothing on," and felt it was gluing him to the sofa when he'd rather do other things. Our daughter would rather be on the internet and I stopped watching TV around two years ago.
I understand about being trapped in a waiting room with the wreckage of civilization being paraded as "entertainment." The magazines are just as bad! I've gotten into the habit of taking my iPad and using only one ear if I get really desperate.
"The Doctors" daytime show is making my mother even more neurotic than she already was.
My GP’s office doesn’t, thank God, and I get the dental assistant to turn it off so I can listen to the lectures on my iPod, unless they’re drilling.
Ok. Yup it’s cold. But summer is really nice.
If it weren’t for people stranded in airports, CNN wouldn’t have an audience.....
If I have to take several of my children to the doctor, I line them up facing away from the TV and read them someone’s schoolwork. The public can learn to dig Greek grammar or the “Iliad.”
I can’t believe that people voluntarily watch so much dreck. All I know about broadcast tv, I learned on FR or in the doctor’s office! (We’re currently getting “Big Bang Theory” on DVD from Netflix. My 9-year-old son is in it ... absolutely terrifying!)
Anoreth and I spent 9 hours “standing by!” in Orlando airport with CNN on. Nobody was watching except the Moslems, go figure. We had General Patton’s memoirs and Oliver North’s “War Stories,” and switched off when we each finished ... and if she got too cranky, I gave her money and she came back with food.
My cousin and her husband have a summer home in Maine. I hear it is nice, especially compared to Dallas, Texas, in July.
I refuse to counter with a remark about clown cars, young lady.
Thank you. I’m 44, and my husband is entirely functional, as it were.
It’s more than made up for with the below 0 temperatures in winter.
