The BBC is reporting that Egyptian Army tanks have allegedly surrounded the embassies of the United States and United Kingdom. This comes after Israel evacuated its entire embassy staff via helicopter. This is coming in through their live blog, and further details appear scarce. The BBC is quoting an al-Jazeera cable:
2125: Tanks have surrounded the US and British embassies in Cairo, Al-Jazeera reports.
This could be a huge, huge problem. This is similar to 1979 when the Islamic rebels took the US Embassy and held hostages for 444 days.
The Carter presidency is being repeated.
You'd think the reporters might have included that little detail....
It’s beginning to look a lot like 1979. feign surprise.
“I hope they are preparing to get those folks out of dodge.”
This job will fall to the Marine Expeditionary Unit. It’s what they do.
Well, with Carter part 2 in office what do you expect?
I hope it’s the Egyptian military trying to protect our embassies, but it wouldn’t surprise me if we see a repeat of Iran during the 70s.
Obama is a lot worse than Carter.
Does it matter? I mean, they could be pointing towards the street in one moment and in the next, can turn and point towards the embassies.
They did the same to Sadat, one momemt pointed away, the next moment...GONE!
“The Carter presidency is being repeated.”
Yep. Worse, probably, in that Iran was alone.
Islamist are now the norm.
That’s not really true. Islamists are the best organized and funded group, that’s why they are in good position. Other groups (like students, middle-class people who are just angry about food prices etc) are not organized. Besides, they don’t have guns. Islamists do.
In Lebanon, Iran has been funding Hezbollah which provides money to the poor Shias. This made Shias loyal to Hezbollah. Sunnis, Christians and other groups are majority, though many have been emigrating out of Lebanon (because of Hezhollah presence and influense). These other groups hate Hezbollah. Without Iranian money, Hezbollah would have nothing and would not be able to be “state within a state”.
It is starting to look more and more like 1979, everyday and in every way.
A couple of reports I’ve watched said that the Egyptian army was cheered by the demonstrators when it appeared, and that the army is more trusted than the police. Don’t know what that might mean concerning the tanks surrounding the US and UK embassies.
There was a Freeper that was headed to Egypt. I guess canceling wasn’t an option?
This is what happens when you have a US president giving tacit approval to terrorists, jihadists and Muslim extremists.
The army is the real power in the country. The back Mubarak but nOT his son. The people actually respect the military as they are not as corrupt or brutal as the security forces and thugs Mubarak surrounds himself with.
If the army wants Hosni out of Egypt, he will be gone soon. His son Gamal already fled to London earlier this week. I am sure Hosni and his family have enough cash that they have stolen from the 1.5 billion$ we give each year to Egypt.
The Arab leaders are as corrupt as they come, and Hosni has just had more time to line his pockets with US Aid cash than most.
What does Obama say?
WWOD?
I expect we might get some words of wisdom from Jimmah in the next day or two. He can seldom resist putting his two cents in, and also spinning things about how he was correct about whatever the foreign policy problem might be.
