As fresh violence erupted across Egypt's towns and cities for a third successive day, Mr ElBaradei urged Mr Mubarak, the country's president of nearly 30 years, to stand down.

With the protesters preparing for their biggest show of force after noon prayers on Friday, the Nobel Peace laureate offered to step in as a transitional leader.

"If people, in particular young people, if they want me to lead the transition, I will not let them down," he told reporters in Vienna before boarding his flight.

Mr ElBaradei presented his offer as a gesture of self-sacrifice, yet it is unclear how grateful the protesters will be.

Disgruntled Egyptians from different classes and different parts of the country have joined the cause, shedding a fear of authority that has become part of the country's collective psyche. It is this growing confidence of the masses, inspired by Tunisia's Jasmine Revolution, which has so unnerved the authorities.

The police have responded with brutality that has drawn condemnation from Mr Mubarak's allies in the West.

Egypt, a long-term ally of the United States, occupies an important strategic position as one of the few Arab countries to recognise Israel. Both Britain and the

Absolutely!! This is an islamic revolution!! That is what killed Sadat!! those parading soldiers that shot him in the head on the reviewing stand were WAHHABI SUNNIS. They were crushed in the aftermath by Mubarak thugs aided by CIA but it is over! We will get the full Sharia takeover. The press in this country does not understand the difference between a Sunni and a female pig. They are idiots with a purpose. The SAME THING IS HAPPENING IN TUNISIA!!! for God sakes. WE better lock and load but we are busy integrating women on the “front lines” and homosexuals in the rear!!oopps

The worst part is the American left sees this as glorious revolution deposing an American allied ‘dictator’. Till the Brotherhood takes over, then they aren’t going to be all smiles.
