Half a century ago, when the Soviets beat us into space with the launch of a satellite called Sputnik, we had no idea how we’d beat them to the moon. The science wasn’t there yet. NASA didn’t even exist

NASA didn't exist at that point, but it was hardly built from nothing after the Sputnik launch. NASA was formed out of NACA, the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics. This forerunner of NASA performed a lot of research that culminated in the design of many WWII-era aircraft, such as the P-51 Mustang. After the war, NACA focused on supersonic flight, helping to develop the X-1 aircraft that broke the sound barrier with Chuck Yeager at the controls. NACA produced much of the experimental data that is used to design and analyze modern aircraft. I use NACA data and methods to this day.

In the late '50s, NACA drew up plans for a blunt-body spacecraft that would re-enter the atmosphere using a heat shield. This design wasn't used until NACA, its designs, and projects were incorporated into NASA in 1958. To say that the science wasn't there in 1957 is a bit of revisionist history.

He’s putting crap in, no-one will understand, Sputnik, watch 3/4’s of the country go wtf was that? This speech will go over many heads and many wont understand a word of it, its too elite wordy.

best excerpt is though : Obama to say “We cannot win the future with a government of the past.” What fortune cookie did he pull that unadulterated pile of crap out of.

I’d really like to watch this speech tonight but I have something else to do. I can’t think what that might be at the moment, but I’ll find something.

"By the way, is global warming in the speech?

Not really.

It's heavy with "new technologies", "wireless for 98% of America", "green jobs" and 1-million of those 40-mile to the charge Chevy Volts by 2015.(i.e., electric automobiles...)

Our infrastructure used to be the best – but our lead has slipped. South Korean homes now have greater internet access than we do. Countries in Europe and Russia invest more in their roads and railways than we do. China is building faster trains and newer airports. Meanwhile, when our own engineers graded our nation’s infrastructure, they gave us a “D.” Our lead has slipped because of you.

The U.S. is facing a "Sputnik moment" in which it must embrace investments in research and education, President Obama will say at his State of the Union address Tuesday night.

Obama, in excerpts of his speech released Tuesday evening, hearkened back to the Sputnik era, when the Russian satellite's 1957 launch set off the "space race" and a decade of intense technological development.

This is his way of saying he wants more huge and expensive government programs.

On govt spending: Pres Obama will say that families sacrifice to live within their means and “deserve a government that does the same.”

please tell me he is not going to say that with a straight face after Michelles foreign holidays and nights out on AF1.
