Not everyone was impressed with First Lady Michelle Obama's choice of gown for the state dinner with the Chinese president.
Storied designer Oscar de la Renta was a vocal critic of her choice of a red Alexander McQueen by British designer Sarah Burton.
"My understanding, de la Renta told Women's Wear Daily, "is that the visit was to promote American-Chinese trade American products in China and Chinese products in America. Why do you wear European clothes?
Many wondered why Obama didn't wear a creation by one of her favorite designers, Taiwanese-born Jason Wu.

Is that all some people have to worry about? GMAFB.
Oh yeah.
Wear something from one of those rengade Taiwanese...
And where are all the “red dress, pink slip” comments the media used on Nancy Reagan?
It's not like we care that the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize winner gave a big dinner for the imprisoner on the 2010 Nobel Peace Prize winner.
Maybe flaunting something by a dead, British designer sends a message to the ChiComs.
China has never forgiven nor forgotten the Opium Wars.
Dead Brit may be a metaphor that the Chinese would interpret correctly.
Dr. Seuss headline: Moo should wear a dress by Wu to see Hu
Because it was RED and she wanted to show she was down with the commie “struggle”.
He’s right.
It is Oscar’s business. He was probably hoping for a US/China fashion trade agreement.
LOL!!!
And the dress exposed one shoulder (unless that was because it didn’t fit properly) and worst of all, exposed the back of her neck. That is considered scandalous by the Chinese — for a woman to expose the back of her neck. It is the equivalent of a woman exposing her breast in their culture. Doesn’t anyone brief the White House on other cultures before these events?

Oscar de la Renta: Why did Michelle Obama wear Alexander McQueen to state dinner with China?
it is a political statement as she has done it before. Because she wanted to wear the colors of Anarcho-syndicalism.

Wow....I had not even thought of that. I think I know the answer to my own question, but was this mentioned or discussed anywhere at all?
EXACTLY!
I think the gown was chosen because it did a good job of covering her wide caboose.
Because Steve McQueen was too small in the hips?
She should wear American designers when in her official role. Just another example of the Obama’s tendency to be ashamed of all things American. There are plenty of talented American designers she could showcase to the world.
