The State of the Union Address is usually among the most important and least memorable of presidential speeches. The speech itself, in an august setting, is an opportunity for a president to break through in a new way. TV and radio carry it live, and it's hard for the average citizen to avoid seeing at least a piece of it. It's a real chance for a White House to tell the American people "This is where we stand, this is why we are here, this is what we believe in."
But most State of the Unions don't measure up. They get beaten down by the staffing process and flattened by the laundry-list aspects: "We'll do this and this and this." There's always too much going on in the speech, and in the end it's usually, in Churchill's phrase, a pudding without a theme.

The stations will be lying like hell about the number of viewers. 3 minutes of an hour speech doesn’t qualify as a viewert.
He already announced that he will be spending more. That is why many of the GOP will not sit with the liberals
I think it was a pea or kernal of corn that flew out of my nose. She gets worse every day. Could she really have been a conservative writing Reagan’s speeches or did he write them and she edited? I’d wager the latter.

Yes, but that was last week and did not get much press.
I guess you've been away from the news today. Obama made a profound announcement this morning that "America must build stuff and invent stuff."
Nothing banal about that at all! Why, inventors and manufacturers all over America are hopping to it right now.
That might not happen, because 0bama has already announced that he is going to spend more money

The only way he could improve his SOTU speech would be to NOT give a SOTU speech.
