Murkowski: I’m worried that Republicans are spending too much time on ObamaCare
Hot Air ^ | January 22, 2011 | ALLAHPUNDIT

My annoyance here isn’t because her point is invalid — I said the same thing last night about taking care to keep Congress’s priorities in line with voters’ — but that, as a member of the caucus, she’s gift-wrapping a meme for the media about the GOP “overplaying its hand” or whatever. The Times a few other outlets have already picked it up, in fact.

Yes, of course it’s important for Republicans to keep spending and the economy as their first order of business (ask former Speaker Pelosi about that), but isn’t that bound to happen now anyway? The House just voted to instruct the various committees to work on drafting alternate health-care legislation, which means this issue should be off the radar screen for weeks or months.

DeMint’s promising to somehow force a vote on the repeal bill in the Senate, but that’ll fail and then O-Care will end up on the backburner in that chamber too.

Meanwhile, we’ve got Obama set to talk about spending and deficits and jobs jobs jobs on Tuesday night and an epic battle about the debt ceiling coming next month, so I’m not really seeing how we’re dangerously bogged down in this issue. The Democrats spent nine months flailing around in the health-care quicksand. Boehner’s spent, what, 10 days? Even an eeyore like me isn’t worried (yet).

She’s a republican concern troll. Nice going, Alaska.

>>>hey redpoll, what was the reason, in your oppinion, this hag won. was it all GOP machine stuff, did they paint Miller in a certain way, and did he deserve it? Whatever you could share with the lower 48 would be interesting.<<<

Hey Joe!

I’ve been following Alaskan politics all of my adult life, and there’s a sad truth about Joe Miller. (Whom I voted for, by the way.)

On the night of the primary win, there was our Alaskan pollster Dave Dittman said on Channel 2 that Miller would win the election if Murkowski decided to run as an independent, since she would siphon off the Democrat votes for Scott McAdams without touching the Republican base.

Lisa must have been listening. She ran to the left using some brilliant strategies. She coopted several prominent Native Democrats and showed up at the Alaskan Federation of Natives annual convention (a big deal up here) - constituencies that normally vote Democrat as a block. She then coopted the spirit of Ted Stevens as the Guardian of He Who Will Bring Pork to the Northland, which brought in the RINOs.

At the same time, Miller floundered. He did not get out often enough. He did not appeal to Natives at all - about one-fifth of Alaska’s population. He was found in a tinytown coverup of emails, which he refused to release, then he did release, all about the very minor incident with him using email from work at lunch for political business. His response was hamhanded at best. His commercials were vague nothings. He forgot to hammer away at the issues that got him to the finals.

In the meantime, Lisa put out commercial after commercial teaching people who to spell her name. There was one brilliant ad showing a kid at a spelling bee spelling Murkowski. In a stroke of genius, she passed out red bracelets with her name on it so people could spell it correctly in the write-in box - small enough so it didn’t count as electioneering at the polls, close enough for people to read.

People here in my little village tell me stories about texting each other at the polls so they could spell the name correctly. My opinion is that political science classes will look at this race as an example of turning a loss into a win.

Miller further screwed up by fighting the process after it was obvious he lost. He tried to change legal precedent about write-in votes. First, state law was clearly defined already so that minor misspellings are accepted as a vote. In any case, there were already enough correct spellings to put Murkowski over the top. Miller’s petulence made him seem petty - which is ironic, since Murkowski looked the same way when she started her write-in campaign. Miller should have conceded gracefully, went on the speaking circuit, got his chops, and returned to defeat Begich. Instead, he’s pretty much ruined his reputation.

I sometimes see people here posting stuff about shadowy conspiracies and malign forces up here, which is crap. Miller lost because the other side scored more points. Sometimes the better ideas lose to the better strategy. It is really sad, because now one of the more conservative states now has a communist for one senator and a Fabian socialist for the other.... whatta mess.

Thanks a whole hell of a lot for giving us this moron for another six years, Alaska.

That about says it for me, too. Without candidates, without paying f'ing attention to the politics and the consequences all the time, your functioning democracy ends up with this thoroughly irritating personality where it doesn't belong.

That said, the time for paying attention to the next election and its consequences is now, not then. The time for dealing with Murck's daughter has passed.

Red my friend, never apologize for something you did not do. I still am wondering how a write-in vote can win anything. I just think there must have been some funny business somewhere. Anyway, it wasn’t your fault so don’t apologize.

“I’m worried that Murky is spending too much time in congress.”

She wants to spend more time creating new legislation that she can stick earmarks on. There is just not enough payola in repealing Deathcare.

The RINOs are complaining about nothing. Obamacare is part of what got this country into the mess it is today. Does Lisa Murkowski think a government takeover of one-seventh of our nation’s economy, with job-killing tax hikes and regulations isn’t worth Congress’ efforts to get rid of? Then she hasn’t been listening to her constituents let alone to the American people. There is no great clamor in the country to keep it!

Thanks buddy. And I witnessed the election - no funny business. Remember, the Seahawks beat the Saints. Sometimes it happens - not often, but it’s just a black swan event. What is more sad is watching Joe Miller implode.

The years I lived in Alaska, I was involved with the Alaska Guides Association. And we had to deal with her Daddy Frank. He was one of the most corrupt politicians ever to hit Washington.

The standard requirement to meet with him, (Frank Murkowski) was to bring money in order to even talk to the jerk. Or else provide him and his select club or bribes with a free trip to a lodge or hunting/fishing/touring Safari. One thing for certain like his clone Ted Stevens, they brought back the Pork to Alaska by the shipload!

I feel quite safe in asserting that Lisa Murkowski doesn't give a GGD what her constituents think. About anything. Save her candidacy, of course.

The Murkette is more self-centered, perhaps, than Nancy Pelosi.

As an Alaskan, let me offer my sincere apologies to the rest of the United States. We really messed up, and when I say “we,” I mean “them.”

In my 68 years of being aware of things, well, at least 50 years because my first 18 years don't really count until I was in the Navy and really started seeing life!

I have NEVER seen any write-in effort that resulted in much participation at all except hers in which I really smelled a rat ('Rat?). I just can't believe but what that "vote" was a total fraud and I got to really wondering about Alaskans myself!

Heck, I was stationed at Kodiak NAS in the 60s, loved it and the people, I'm beginning to wonder, surely my admiration wasn't misplaced...

Please read my other posts about this.

Lisa’s election - like Strom Thurmond’s winning write-in campaign - is a “black swan” event. It happens very rarely, and when it does, it takes everyone by surprise. The sad truth is that the election was Joe Miller’s to lose, and he did. She orchestrated her campaign brilliantly - which I watched happen. Sad but true.

She’s pimping herself to her supporters from the election. She has to be seen making the case for continuing earmarks so the Alaska democrats can hold their power through her.

I'm not a Lisa fan, but I wouldn't call playing to the folks who elected you "pimping." Lisa didn't run as a regular Republican, or a conservative. I'd rather have her caucusing with us than with the dems, but under the circumstances I wouldn't expect too much.

The cynical attitude is warranted... it’s just the payoffs, political posturing, and appeals to the base interests of the voters was done right out in the open. You should have seen her pandering to the Native voters... it would have made a Democrat from an east coast inner city proud.

And not only are we stuck with her... we’re stuck with a senator who absolutely hates conservatives, too. She will gleefully try to smash us dead. Not to be uncivil, ya know. LOL
