Police beat

ARKANSAS DEMOCRAT-GAZETTE

Blasted burglar, says LR caterer The owner of Chatz Smoked Meats and Catering told Little Rock police that he shot a man who was trying to burglarize his business Tuesday night.

According to a police report, Frank Chatwood, who owns the catering company at 8801 Colonel Glenn Road, was at his business around 10:50 p.m. when he heard a noise and saw a man throw a rock through a window.

While the man was trying to climb through the window, Chatwood pulled out a Tarus Judge revolver, which uses .410 shotgun shells, fired once and hit the man, police said. The burglar ran from the scene after getting peppered by the shot, the report said.

No description of the man was available Wednesday and police did not have a suspect.

The Judge is a great sidearm and now there is a small rifle called the circuit judge that is virtually the same thing just in a rifle form. Same action etc. it’s light and is a great backpacking gun.

I would think "bloody" and "scared" would apply, maybe "regretful" too.

I love a story with a happy ending.

Yep, the Judge is a great tool for what it was intended for, which was exactly this sort of situation. The perp should be damned glad that this businessowner wasn't loaded up with some of the specialized defense .410 rounds that ammo manufacturers are now cooking up (combos of disks and shot -- nasty at CQB ranges). That, or just slugs.

Ditto. I owned a 410 derringer once. I fired it at a full sheet of plywood from 10 feet with 0 Buck. Only one pellet hit the sheet and it was about three feet away from where I aimed.

"The burglar ran from the scene after getting peppered by the shot, the report said."

> This only proves what I've always said about "The Judge." It's a gimmick gun, with a highly successful ad campaign. 410 shot is small game load meant for rabbits. If either .410 shot or slug was a proven man-stopper it would be in use by military and police. There's a reason it's not. The revolver itself is inaccurate, and muzzle velocities for it's .410 slug and .45 load are severely diminished by the shortened barrel. Shot fired through its rifled barrel can produce a donut ring shot pattern, leaving the center of mass aim point lightly peppered with bird shot. Acceptable for quail. Unacceptable in a gun fight. Nope. You can have 10 rounds of proven .45 ACP in a more compact, more accurate, and easier to master weapon than "The Judge."

Careful, that could be considered "incitement to violence".

Or .45 ball, which the Judge will also chamber as .45 Colt.

I had a JUDGE (Public Defender) about six months ago. Bought it new in the box. I sold it before I EVER fired the dang device! In the course of simply manual working of the action (dry firing, opening and closing the cylinder, etc) the stupid built in key operated "safety mechanism" partially SET ITSELF! I have no kids at home and had already determined I would never have need of the internal lock. So I put the key away. Then it set itself and I couldn't find the key. I had to send the thing back to the factory right here in Miami FL (that in itself was an expensive nightmare involving FEDEX since they do not allow for private drop offs). I got it back inside of another week with a little note that they had "replaced a part" but didn't say what part or what was wrong. I asked my local gunsmith if he'd ever heard of this happening elsewhere and his reply was in the affirmative. Moreover, sometimes, the factory "fixes" don't stay "fixed!" Sorry, I refuse to trust my life to any firearm that malfunctions even before being live fired! So I traded it for a Sig + some $$$. I'll never own another Taurus of any model.

Interesting. I know three folks in my area who have 'em, and they are all pleased as punch. They just left the lock unlocked, have never bothered with it, and not had the problems you've described. Two fellows in particular use theirs a lot -- they own some land with wild pumpkin and watermelon patches on them, which make great targets. $:-)
