For the most part, I think Rush Limbaugh is better ignored. Hes a shameless liar who has helped turn incivility into the national past-time, a demagogue who has done more than his share to divide the body politic. And made hundreds of millions of dollars doing it. But his utterly classless mocking today of a visiting dignitary Chinese President Hu Jintao ought to embarrass many of Limbaughs ardent fans. While Limbaugh frequently engages in race-baiting, his performance today was a low ebb even for him. Commenting on the fact that Fox didnt immediately provide translation during Hu Jintaos press conference, he mocks the presidents language in the childish and stupid faux Mandarin that was typical of bad Hollywood slapstick of the 1920s and 30s. (h/t Steve Benen):
Were not gonna gyp Fox, Rush Limbaugh said. I wanted to gyp it because the well, the Hu Jintao, he was speaking, and they werent translating. They normally you have some translator every couple of words. But Hu Jintao was just going [mocking Chinese speech for 20 seconds]. Nobody was translating. But thats the closest I can get.
Its not even funny just dumb. If you can stomach it, you can hear it on this audio clip:

No, this is a different wildeyed commy nutcase.
Bio: Just another angry black woman.
Too many to track individually. Need rounding up and a big L branded on their forehead, and nuetered at same time.
Think Shelia Jackson Lee, only (arguably) dumber.
Hu the hell cares?
Rush basically said the same thing.
Pretty close. Neal Boortz calls her
"The cutest little Commie in Atlanta"...
I’d bet Cynthia didn’t even listen to his show yesterday, but got her info from media matters or some other source. I thought Rush was funny yesterday.
Sorry — I didn’t think it was funny at all.
It wasn’t that he was making fun of Hu, as much as he was mocking someones language. So he didn’t understand it. So what.
I’m not Chinese but I have studied it as well as French. Languages have respected beginnings and purposes for a people. To mock some ones personal language is a low blow —— and beneath Rush.
I told him so, in an e-mail. I’m a ditto-head, but I don’t follow blindly. He should apologize.
Is ebonics OK to mock?
I agree... Rush is a joy to listen to!
Cynthia Hu?
I don’t know how I would react if he went off on vernacular speech. I think it would be lamebrained of him to do such a long spiel as he did yesterday. But Ebonics you can understand and mocking it is trying to make yourself look cool. That isn’t what happened yesterday. He thought he was being funny, but he wasn’t. He stooped to a child’s level.
I like slapstick comedy. And I don’t care about hurting feeling of commies.
Slapstick is something altogether different. Rush may be an entertainer to some, but you know he is more than that. And your bit about ‘commies’? Don’t narrow it down from mocking an ancient language for millions of people, to hurting a few commies.
Go ahead — have the last word.
I couldn’t care less who mocks whose language. If the chicoms, or frogs, or krauts mock english, good for them.
Yeah, because the left NEVER makes fun of southern accents...
Yes, when I lived in europe the French and german speakers called American speech “speaking with marbles in your mouth” and they are right, because of our unique R sound.
If she is so ga ga over communism; then she should go and live in a communist country. She won’t because she knows she wouldn’t last a second.
I don't know if he explained the term this time, as he has often done in the past.
That would baffle many an unsophisticated listener.
Yes, but an intelligent (if unsophisticated) listener who was even slightly familiar with Rush would then wonder whether or not he had misunderstood what Rush said. When Rush is not imitating foreign languages, he uses relentlessly coherent English. Either Cynthia Tucker somehow missed the spelling error (very unlikely), or she was confident that Rush said and meant "gyp," which turns his sentences into nonsense. Apparently it never entered Tucker's mind that she might have misunderstood Rush's words, or she would not have posted the quote on her blog.
