The K98 is a very strong action and is well represented and copied by many sporting rifles. That does not necessarily make it a Better Weapon.

The Garand had better sights than the K98 and a Higher Rate of Fire and more Magazine Capacity.

I own a 1917 Sporterized K98 and a Bosnian K98 as well as a very nice Sako which is an exceptional K98 copy.

But, If I had to go into Battle I would Grab my Garand first and My M4 for the light close in work.

They did, but most American help was “software” such as rations, trucks, uniforms, and locomotives, which enabled the Soviets to focus on weapons production. (Though they liked the P-39 Aircobra).
