Former President George H.W. Bush is wasting no time deciding who he thinks should succeed Republican U.S. Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison.
Bush, more than a year before the GOP primary, threw his support Monday behind former Texas Secretary of State Roger Williams of Fort Worth.
"I wanted to get on board early," Bush said while seated next to Williams at the former president's Houston office. "I just know he can do this job."
Hutchison, 67, announced last week she wouldn't seek re-election when her term expires at the end of 2012. She's held the seat since 1993.
Including Williams, who has been running for the seat for two years now, the 2012 field already is taking shape.
Texas Railroad Commissioner Michael Williams is likely to get into the race next week.
"People get ready!" he said in a Monday message posted on his Twitter account.

I don’t regard the Bush as a credibility booster. Based on what I know, Michael Williams is the best choice.
2nd that, from a redneck cracka! Michael Williams IS the best choice
Michael Williams IS the best candidate.Period.
He’s got my vote.
Wrong Bush, no?
I should think a Bush endorsement—any Bush—would be the kiss of death.
Yessiree, I’ll be votin’ for Williams all right....MICHAEL! :)
Yeah that pretty much settles it for me. As much personal respect I have for W his politics are wack.
Yes, Michael Williams is the man. He would be the least likely to “grow in office” like Hutchison did and Cornyn appears to be in the process of doing.
There will be a plenty lined up I expect. It remains to see who will be viable in the presidential year........
From the DMN is a note of some potential candidates on both sides of the aisle.
Likely Republican contenders to succeed her include Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst, Dallas Mayor Tom Leppert , state Sen. Florence Shapiro of Plano , Railroad Commissioners Elizabeth Ames Jones and Michael Williams, Weatherford car dealer Roger Williams, and Ted Cruz, a former Texas solicitor general and candidate for state attorney general.
Possible Democratic contenders include former Texas Comptroller John Sharp and former Houston mayor Bill White.

You might be missing Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott.
I’m afraid that roger williams will be the next Senator. He is at the head of the cronies list.
It’s his turn.
Ted Cruz might be the best choice. He is from Cuban immigrants who fled Castro. One article I read about him impressed me and Rubio in Florida has the same background. We NEED people who understand American exceptionalism. I need to know more about him but now he looks good.
There will be many that will speculate about a run I’d guess but who will be viable come campaign time is another question. Money is a big factor in Texas because of the size and the cost with four large media markets.
I saw something a day or two ago indicating that U.S. Rep. Joe Barton, R-Arlington maybe interested. It will be interesting along with the GOP presidential primary on the ballot also.
I sure representative Louie Gohmert!
As a non-Texan with no right to speak on the issue, I, nevertheless, will. It would be great for Sarah Palin to establish residency there and run for the Senate. Alaskans and Texans have a great deal in common with respect to independence and conservatism.
Well there's one certain disqualification.
I love Sarah but Texas is not New York.
It would be great for Sarah Palin to establish residency there and run for the Senate.
Why not AZ as someone in the family just bought a home there? Apparently residency requirements don’t take long to establish. Sen. Kyl is a Class 1 senator with the term ending Jan. 2013.
Question..Texas is getting FOUR new congressional seats next year...obviously to some extent it will depend on how the lines are drawn, but is it possible that some of these potential senate candidates are positioning themselves for a House race?
