Former President George H.W. Bush is wasting no time deciding who he thinks should succeed Republican U.S. Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison.
Bush, more than a year before the GOP primary, threw his support Monday behind former Texas Secretary of State Roger Williams of Fort Worth.
"I wanted to get on board early," Bush said while seated next to Williams at the former president's Houston office. "I just know he can do this job."
Hutchison, 67, announced last week she wouldn't seek re-election when her term expires at the end of 2012. She's held the seat since 1993.
Including Williams, who has been running for the seat for two years now, the 2012 field already is taking shape.
Texas Railroad Commissioner Michael Williams is likely to get into the race next week.
"People get ready!" he said in a Monday message posted on his Twitter account.

Possible I guess but like you said it depends upon the new boundries. I don’t know where they all reside but I honestly don’t think most that are mentioned would be looking at a congressional district. That is just my initial reaction with truly no basis in fact only gut feeling.
Texas is still one of nine states that has to get the feds approval for any Congressional redistricting. So whatever lines/boundries are drawn will have to have the blessing of the Feds. Gerrymandering of districts lines isn’t exactly unheard of in Texas. Texas has asked for and been denied the removal from the list of nine.
The rats complain that there are no Black Senators.
Just imagine how their heads would explode if Williams was in there. Texas conservatives need to make this happen.
And whoever Pappy Bush wants, I don’t.
