The A-12 was always a lose/lose proposition. Naval aviation bet the farm on it, and they lost.
They will spend 5 billion to collect 3 billion...............
The A-12 was also bogged down with performance problems. Would have been better to develop an A-6F. Although I am still partial to its contemporary, the Buccaneer.
Having been a Requirements Officer on OPNAV staff at the time I’m well familiar. Agreed, the A-6F was the better choice. So what do we wind up with? The Super Hornet, which IS better than nothing.
On paper since the project never progressed past the mockup stage.
